There is a wealth of basic and detailed information available on VIN, trim/cowl tag, engine and axle codes that can be found at the following locations. Please consider consulting these databases before posting a question which could very likely be answered by the data found on these sites:

Team Chevelle Resources for year-specific information:

https://www.chevelles.com/years/index.shtml

Team Chevelle Resources for all kinds of Chevelle-related information:

https://www.chevelles.com/

Dale McIntosh's Chevelle Stuff:

http://www.chevellestuff.net/

One very useful page on Dale's site is for decoding Trim Tags:

How to spot a true 69-72 SS:

Steering column & steering gear information by Jim Shea

A & F-car tilt column papers

Here are links to the A & F-car tilt column papers. All you ever wanted to know (and more) about replacing your tilt column rack. You can replace the rack with the column in the car but it is a real pain trying to adjust the ignition switch with the new rack. It is far easier to remove the column. Take off the capsule mounting bracket (the bracket where the two vertical fasteners pass through the aluminum capsules) that holds the column up into the dash. Tighten your vise on two of the bracket weld nuts that are in-line.
