Re: 10D build with 06 engine date??

I think this car has been brought up here before??

That build date, correct me if I am wrong, is OCT of '68. An 854 casting number block and a three digit suffix code 396 engine would have come in very late in 1969 model year (if at all) wouldn't it have?

You are correct, something doesn't seem right to me.

But the experts should chime in.

ok - just found the post...

*** Does anyone know when in the 1969 MY they did convert over to the 854 casting numbers instead of the 272? I have a block that is stamped T0521 and is a JD code 272 with a VIN on a vehicle that would have been built in either the first or second week of June 1969.

If you are interested in the car, as a start, ask for a good picture of the casting date on the block. It should be visible on the side of the block near the starter.

The stamp pad is a problem for me.

The broach marks are not typical.

While some misalignment of stamped characters is common, this is a little too random to be typical factory production.

Re: 10D build with 06 engine date??

should'nt the partial vin on the block start with a 7 and not a 1?
Maybe they were cleaning out the back room of the factory in june of 69 and found this car sitting there since oct 68 and just stuck the 70 coded motor in. I don't know!
How far in advance do they start making the motors for the next year?

Partial VIN for a 1969 (and later I believe) would start with "1" designating Chevrolet. I believe that started in 1968; all 1967 and earlier that I remember did begin with just the year.

10D body date - October, 4th week
Atlanta sequence #306807 - very early November according to numbers released by GM.
Engine date & ID T0630CKF - June 30 L78 w/TH400 and 854 block, along with 3-letter suffix code would indicate, according to Colvin's by the numbers, a late 69 402 which June of 1969 would fit. Agree that a casting date on the block would be helpful as too much seems out of sorts for a 'matching numbers'.

Re: 10D build with 06 engine date??

Sorry, but to my knowledge the 272 blocks were all 396's. If you have a 402, it's probably been rebuilt and bored .030".

Authentication and pre-purchase inspection service still available. PM me for more information.

Re: 10D build with 06 engine date??

in 69 true 396 blocks had casting number 3935440 and some time in june casting numbers changed for the 402 over bore to3955272 the date varied from plant to plant but was still regarded as 396 by the factory
