Re: Please help decode....T0921JW

The Tonawanda stamp will read T0921XX

T=Tonawanda
0921= Sept. 21st.
XX= 2 Letter Suffix for Engine Code 2 Letters prior to Late 69.

I don't have my referance book to decipher JW, But JK was my 69 325HP.

Re-read you VIN pad on the Engine. Your "4" is in error.

Re: Please help decode....T0921JW

I'm assuming this is your VIN stamp. Whomever was working the line that day must have been hung over. The "4" is likely just an error on the stampers part. JW is likely your correct Suffix. They really screwed up the VIN too. It's so bad, it has to be genuine.

I'm almost positive the 4W is correct. 4W decodes as 1968 4W Chevelle 396 350 Auto Trans . I would bet the GM of Canada paperwork has is wrong.

I hadn't seen that code either until TOYZ posted it here a couple weeks ago. Most codes that start with a number are marine engines. There are 3 cases where it was used for 1968 Chevelle 396s: 4T, 4U and 4W. Check the site below.

Thats right, all GM employees were drunks and any mistakes were because they were drunk or hungover

My grandfather worked the GM line from the early 50's to the late 80's. He was not a drunk and is a good decent man. Your statement is offensive and narrow.

I guess its hard to type in the sarcasm. Look at my quote, I was responding to HIS comment about the employee being hung over. I was a GM employee for 30 years and I am NOT A DRUNK either, but a lot guys think that EVERYONE that worked for GM was/is a drunk

Re: Please help decode....T0921JW

Ok I get ya. Sorry. Peace. I've got a few questions about the stamping tool.
What did they look like? They didn't stamp the numbers individually did they? Was it a tool that you could set the numbers and stamp the number in one hit?

Re: Please help decode....T0921JW

The stamp held several numbers and letters so it could all be stapmed at the same time. The first group was stamped at the engine plant and the second group was stamped at the auto assembly plant.
