Heads up or down? (Roseheads that is)

Sort of along the same lines as the thread requesting KAN body tag info. (well a little bit anyway )
https://www.chevelles.com/forums/showthread.php?t=125197

Another interesting tidbit MAYBE;

How many people noticed that the rosehead rivits are put in from the bottom up on Kansas City (Leeds MO) cars so that the roseheads are hidden underneath while on Baltimore and California cars they are put in from the top down so that the roseheads show?

Re: Heads up or down? (Roseheads that is)

Just seems odd putting the rose heads so they can't be seen.
Defeats the purpose of even having the special VIN tag rivits.

Not only that Dean but it seems to be a convenient place for water and debris to collect.
I'm wondering if it was just because of the positioning of the installer on the KAN assembly line?? Possibly at that point of assembly, the person doing the trim tag install couldn't access it from the "correct" side.
Which brings up another question to me...which way do these rivets install? I'm assuming the open end??

Dean, maybe I'm having a Senior Moment here, but I can't even fathom what you're talking about I can't see any VIN tag rivets (top side or bottom side) at all on my 69. As I recall from my previous 69, when I had it all apart, the VIN plate was spot welded on the bottom side of the dashboard.

Bill, the spot where they are riveted sits directly under the dash pad edge closest to the window, you'd need to pry the dash pad or remove it to see them.

OK, now I'm confused. Are we talking about the trim tag located on top of the firewall/cowl area or the vin tag located inside at the base of the windshield? I was thinking trim tag...

I assumed VIN tag since he said rosehead (rosette) rivits. I personally have never heard Cowl tag rivets referred to as rosehead, but am willing to admit I can learn more than one new thing on any given day. Please kick me if I just went off in the wrong direction again.

Rosette rivets are only used for VIN tags.

OK, but that looks like a door pillar tag. Bill & I need to see pics of the VIN tag on the dash on a '68 or later car. I went out & looked at mine and couldn't see any rivets. I didn't take my dash pad out, are they under the pad??

Yes, if nobody posts a pic before tomorrow I will get a picture of my old man's work in progress 68 camaro in the morning.

Re: Heads up or down? (Roseheads that is)

Yeah I was talking about VIN tags, I was just linking to the subject thread that I thought was kinda related.
A good point though, the guy might have said "what the heck you can't see them anyway with a padded dash".

I was looking at them with the dash pads off so I don't know how many different cars or which cars they are actually exposed on before the dash pad deteriorates.

Now I gotta go out and see if they can be seen on my 69.

Re: Heads up or down? (Roseheads that is)

The rivets are installed on my Baltimore car from the bottom up. The 68 assembly instructions show it to be this way also. Page 37

If you think about it this does make sense. If there is an issue with the DMV inspectors all they have to do is look under the dash to confirm the rosette rivet. Otherwise they would have to take your dash pad off.
