"660" Muncie case ID tag decipher?

This tag is located on driver's side sidecover. Tag is affixed with the forward most lower sidecover bolt. It reads:

"3946798"

Transmission is in a '69 Chevelle. Manufacturers "P" code stamped on opposite side of case indicates an M21. Any help deciphering this is appreciated. I checked Colvins, but no joy.

Thanks.
Sam

Re: "660" Muncie case ID tag decipher?

3846798 is the Chevrolet part number of the trans. Fits:
69 Pass (close ratio w/P/Trac., 3.73 rear)
69 Chevy, Chevelle, Camaro (close ratio) w/3.55,3.73 axles (302,396).

The "P" simply indicates Muncie and not necessarily a specific M20/M21/M22 model. 69 and later Muncies were stamped with an ID code something like P9R25B for Muncie, 1969, October, 25, M21. I'd imagine yours is stamped similar; P9(letter/number)B.

Re: "660" Muncie case ID tag decipher?

Hey Dale,

Thanks for the reply. This car is a documented (POP, invoices, order form, etc.) 396, M21, 3.73 (CI) drivetrain Malibu SS. My reference to "P" code was merely an abbreviation. Actual is P9D03B. Interesting that the tag code covered more than one posi ratio in two performance motors. Thanks for the good info. This info wasn't on Chevelle Stuff was it?

A portion of it is. The part number itself came from my Chevrolet Parts & Accessory Catalog (circa 1971) I retrieved from the trash when I worked at a Chevy dealership in 71-72. Muncie decoding info came from: Quick Decoding Links > Muncie ID

Dale,

"Why do Muncie transmission codes begin with the letter "P"? Who knows..."

The P on the beginning of Muncie date codes stands for Passenger Muncie (truck Muncies begin with N).
This is straight out of the "early" Chevy parts books.

Cool, Tom - thanks! I'll add that bit of information. Now, why do trucks begin with "N"?
