That is the partial VIN of the (1978 Chevy) truck it was originally installed in. Look above the timing cover on the semi-circular machined pad for the date/suffix code.

Re: 454 without a suffix code?

if I remember, it's a 2 bolt main. I asked about this motor a few years ago. I did a compression check cold and only got 100 to 110 psi out of the cylinders. it's got 781 heads, with the manifold off I can see a cmdouble roller chain. insides very clean. i was going to use it in some future project as is, just havent found a project to stick it in. jim

Re: 454 without a suffix code?

I had a 959 block from a 78ish truck and it was a four bolt with small oil cooler plugs. You might get lucky if you haven't pulled the pan.

Thinking back about 1978 and 250 HP doesn't sound too bad compared to the offerings that were available back then. The trick would be to click off the right options off the list when you're buying your short bed P/U in 1978.
But Chevy came out with the same idea a couple years later right ?

Re: 454 without a suffix code?

Mine is a 78' 959 block with 781 heads out of a motor home and is a 2 bold block.

There's nothing wrong with being stupid as long as you know you're stupid, it's when you're stupid and don't know it that you become dangerous.
