The only sources for that information are in the documentation that came with your car (such as the Protect-O-Plate, Window Sticker, Build Sheet, etc.). Neither the VIN nor the Cowl Tag (unless the car was built in Canada -- which it was not) will tell you anything other than a L6 or a V8. You can check the Fuel Line (assuming it's original): one line of 3/8th inch diameter is a good indicator of a L78 or an L72. A Fuel Line with a secondary (return) line indicates most other engine sizes..
Tom,
You can decode your cowl tag at Chevellestuff.net. That will tell you what plant it was assembled at. Is it possible to find the build sheet somewhere in the car. If an Atlanta 69 probably never was a build sheet.
i have no build sheet also.
it's a th400 car.
So in theory it could be this engines.
How are these in relation to which casting numbers from engines?
I can check Mortec, but it shows many engines
I have the chevelle listed in my list from ebay in aug 2007 and jan 2008, unfortunately that is before I started capturing seller info but below is a pic from that period.
On the engine pad the first set of numbers on the left are from the engine factory and give you the date and designation of the engine as well as which plant the engine was built. The second set of numbers was stamped at the assembly plant and contains the year of assembly plant designator and partial VIN. If you only see the first numbers on the left, check the rough area near the oil filter. Some plants stamped the con Vin or partial VIN in this location. see attachment.
Your transmission will also have a con VIN stamped on the left side of the trans above the oilpan rail near the shifter mechanism if original.
