I or a lower case L on a casting date?

my spare 66 12 bolt has what looks like a casting date of l 30 5. reading some old posts I saw that GM didnt use the I because it could be mistaken for a 1. so it should be a L for November even though it doesnt have the lower horizontal part of the capital L? jim

Re: I or a lower case L on a casting date?

The I was used on some parts, but not others. It was used on the axle pumpkins (and L means December on an axle). At least that is true for 64-67, I can't say for sure on 68+

Re: I or a lower case L on a casting date?

"L" is used as a casting month on most items; alternator, heads, engine block, intake manifold, exhaust manifold, starter, water pump, etc. The letter "I" was not used on engine blocks but was used on most everything else including rear-end housings.

https://www.chevellestuff.net/qd/rear_axle_info.htm

The letter "I" is often used on engine build stamp date stamps in lieu of the number "1" but often both may be used at the same time on a date. I've seen an LS5 engine with an engine stamp of T1I2I (tee, one, eye, two, eye). and TI1I2 before.

So would Sept 30 rear end be a late 65 or early 66 rear? Jim

Early 1966. The 1966 model year began production in August of 1965.
