Large number on '65 Cowl tag?

Has anyone ever seen a large number like this number 5 stamped on my cowl tag. It looks like it’s original. Ive searched it up and haven’t seen one before.

Re: Large number on Cowl tag

The top tag, also from Atlanta, shows the same number 5 stamp you have, just in a slightly different spot.

Re: Large number on Cowl tag

Some dealers stamped the month the car was delivered to the customer and some probably stamped the month the car arrived at the dealer, just a guess!

That "5" should be the Jig Number the body was assembled in at the Fisher Body Plant. QC purposes.

I've seen numbers as high as 21 & 22 for Fremont (Z) but 5 is the highest number for Atlanta.

My 67 SS 396 also from Atlanta has similar large number, I have never known its purpose. It appears to be an 11, but each "1" was individually struck.

The month and day of delivery was supposed to be stamped on the VIN tag (not the Trim tag). That's why the VIN tags have "DD" out beside CHEVROLET -- stands for "Delivery Date" -- and the date was supposed to be stamped to the right of the DD.

As already noted above, those "inward" stampings on trim tags are generally believed to be body jig numbers or inspection stamps, depending on which plant.

True but the dealers would stamp the VIN plate itself like this.

FWIW, here's a "6" on several 65 Atlanta tags:
