4l80e or t56?

well i didnt know where to put this thread so i put it in here well i am asking for opinions here. which would you do? 4L80E trans (which i already have in the garage). or a t56? I have NEVER had a car that i have built be an auto and for some reason i am feeling like it needs to be a manual trans but i am stuck. The pros is i already have the trans the cons is my car is setup for manual which means i need to mod the tunnel for it right? the cons is i need to buy an auto shifter with the console, plus buy the shifter kit so it can match my 4 speed auto trans. t56 pros well 6 gears! can take a beating (i know because i have one in my rx7) has 2 over drives which is good for my 4.10 rear gears. cons i need to get a hydrolic setup and i have to cut the trans tunnel for the monster to fit in its place. so which would you guys pick?

IMO, you gotta have the "Man Pedal", you know, the one on the left

Kinda biased as I have a T56 in my garage already.
Yes, either way you're gonna have to cut the tunnel, not sure how much for the auto though.

Re: 4l80e or t56?

The auto is going to depend on your engine mount height. It should fit with some light massaging if you use stock height mounts.

If you go with the BRP set up that puts the motor a few inches higher than the trans as to go up that much as well. (well at least almost that much)

Re: 4l80e or t56?

the 4l80e comes both 4wd and 2wd. I have my LQ sitting in the garage with the 4l80e right now and i am so worried that i am not going to be happy with it when i am done with it. i am in the hunt for an ls1 t56 but i am not having much luck as of yet. as for mounts i have no idea what i am going to do yet i am following a few build threads to see if i can follow along and do what they are doing. but i do know i want to have the motor and trans bolted together soon and thats my goal before feb 2012

Re: 4l80e or t56?

Just finished my T56 Magnum install. Love it for my intended use. For just a cruiser or a dedicated drag car would have left it an auto. If they ever come out with a stand alone controller for the 6spd autos then maybe will switch back.

A big thing to consider is what type of speedometer you intend to run and how it will be adapted to the trans you choose. I went with a 5" electric speedo and have to build a new dash to make it work. I got it when I had an LT1 style t56 and it only had an option for electric. My new magnum has the option of running either electric or mechanical.

Wheres that money tree hiding and who forgot to water it?

Re: 4l80e or t56?

i would suggest to keep it manual if it was a manual car...
and if it was an auto car that you might be better with the auto...
sounds like you want the manual more than the auto
