Yikes, internet rumor is a failure to stop and ran off the prepped road surface. Also no roll cage. The car was a modified F-104.
Please tell me this not ture

Not familiar with this type of racing. From the looks of the wheels I guess you are not needing them for traction? Just strap yourself on a jet engine and hang on for the ride. Takes more balls then I've got.

There will eventually be an accident report released, when it is read it. The rumor mill isnít worth yours, or anyone elseís time.

Several years ago there was an accident at the local track that killed the driver, there was a lot of obvious BS floating around. Everyone was an expert. About 6 months later I was talking to the head of the fire safety, during our conversation he told me some things about the car and other factors, which I believe were true, since they made sense, but were never brought up by anyone that was part of the rumor mill.

After looking at pictures of the car it does look to me as an F-104 without wings. The cockpit has no visible roll bar that I could see.

This says it was an F104 and had no roll bar. Would it have helped?

At 480 MPH, not much is going to help.

From time to time the local track will get someone bringing their car on a Wednesday night for a few shakedown runs before heading to Bonneville for speed weeks. Itís a cheap way to make sure everything is functioning. The track will accommodate them when the rules donít line up, usually about ground clearance and driver compartment access. They usually draw a crowd, several have mentioned how strict SCTA is with their rulebook. I hope that isnít a factor as to why this record attempt was made in Oregon and not the salt flats or El Mirage.

Re: Jessi Combs RIP

I have seen a video special about this ďcarĒ. Yes, it was based on a F-104 fuselage. From what I saw, it was a rather low buck operation compared to the other Land Speed Record Jet Cars.

I love LSR cars, the wheel driven kind. The Nobel Thrust SSC effort proved if you put enough thrust behind something on wheels, you could break the sound barrier on wheels. But the Thrust SSC was light years ahead in technology compared to this car.

It would be a shame if JC got killed in a vehicle that never should have been going that fast to begin with.

As I understand it, SCTA doesn't sanction any jet cars. They are wheel-driven only.

Re: Jessi Combs RIP

For these vehicles, most sanctioning bodies now require a "safety capsule" type driver's area, one that would be significantly stronger than an older design of roll and safety bars only. Who knows if this vehicle had any of that in place. too bad, she was a good lady.
