Re: 64 Chevelle SS At The Body Shop and Build

Got my new 383 stroker the other day. We race with the Jegs/CRA Series and they offer a small discount on some items. They were racing at Winchester this past weekend and I had them bring me the engine there. It makes 440 HP and 466 Tq.

I was going to do a retrofit roller cam and I wanted aluminum heads and by the time everything was said and done, it wasn't a whole lot more to buy a new engine...Probably less than $500 if I factor in the heads and cam and with selling my existing engine. The new engine has a one piece rear seal and it has the fuel pump boss. It comes with roller rockers, too.

I have the original intake, carb and valve covers from a 1970 Z/28 I bought in 1973. I put a cross ram on in...Who knew how much those would be these days...

Here are a few pictures...

Ran the Engine on a Run-in Stand Tonight - With Pics..

I bought my 383 stroker from Jegs and it had already been dynoed. It came less intake, carb, balancer distributor and flywheel. A friend just built a run-in stand so I brought it to my house and ran the engine again. I ran it with my original 70 Z/28 intake and carb. Those parts haven't been on a car since the early 70's. I bought a carb rebuild kit, went thru it and the carb ran perfectly. I was surprised, to say the least...Oil at 70 PSI, so I am happy...

I have 3 more carbs I want to sell, so I'll run them on the engine to make sure they are good.

Some pics...

Re: 64 Chevelle SS At The Body Shop and Build

Working on cleaning the trans up...Found out it is original to the car...Kind of odd they don't stamp the engine, but this transmission is stamped in 3 places.

Also, I have as close to a POP as you are going to get with a 64...

Also found an interior broadcast sheet, but don't know what anything means.

Guy who bought it came from a humble little home probably only a few years old at the time. Just for kicks I googled the address;

Re: 64 Chevelle SS At The Body Shop and Build

I was at the body shop again..More Pics. ready for final blocking and going to be painted early next week.

I learned something today. I know they sand the paint when it is finished, but I didn't realize how long it takes. I think the painter told me they sand it first with 800 or 1000, then 1500 and finally with 3000. After that, they begin the buffing with compound process...He told me it is at least 40 hours of labor to do this..He also said that after each time they sand it, they let it sit and harden/cure for a couple of days. This makes sure the paint is nice and hard for the next sanding.....And, the shops spray booth is heated so they can bake the paint for a few hours after they are done painting.

This means I won't get the car for at least 3 more weeks.
