Re: 66 Chevelle: Return of the Aztec

Dang !! I was looking forward to seeing this at Des Moines.

I didn't know this was a conversion. The Z bar is quite particular to this vehicle and hard to find oem. The aftermarket pieces aren't as strong and tend to flex. If that is what you have, it could be part of the problem of not enough pedal travel.

I'll be at Des Moines with the '38.

I had to re-attach the arm on my aftermarket z-bar, I think I might have some photos of the correct angle. I'll look.

Brian, did you come out on Sat with the morning rain? We sat in the car or a building from around 6 am until noon, when it finally quit drizzling. We were there until 10:30 pm. The fireworks were great !

Re: 66 Chevelle: Return of the Aztec

Yep I was there, I didnt have enough time to see all of the cars though, as I had my wife and kids there, they wanted to leave at around 3 pm.
I didn't see your coupe, where was it parked? Of course I might have just walked past it and not realized what it was- so many cars you start to get overwhelmed.

Re: 66 Chevelle: Return of the Aztec

We were on the grass in the park area, right off the pathway near the gazebo.
Friday was sunny and HOT and we had to park on the street. Saturday, was SUPPOSED to be sunny and hot too, so we went for the shade and didn't need it.

Re: 66 Chevelle: Return of the Aztec

Well July is over and I am finally done with more distraction projects (painted my co-workers van after a fender bender) and rebuilt a wrecked 2013 Impala for my daughters first car (see my other thread in Body Shop). That car turned out awesome!

Anyway, Chevelle is back in the shop. I painted the tail panel satin black and I installed the tail lights/moldings etc on the rear end of the car:

Next I need to find and purchase a different Muncie tranny. Previous one was leaky and needed a rebuild I'm afraid.

While I'm at it I can figure out what's causing my clutch engagement issue.

Re: 66 Chevelle: Return of the Aztec

Rear bumper, bumperettes, CHEVELLE emblem, SS396 emblems all installed. I am really digging it!
Now I am working on the front Grille. I have painted and detailed every piece to make it as good as I can. The grill is an OEM grille that was severely weathered. Overall it was pretty straight but the aluminum was discolored (white) from oxidation and had several blemished and scratches and gouges in it.
I removed the anodizing using some chemicals and went through several levels of sand paper grits (started with 80 grit, then 150, 180, 220, 400 wet, 600 wet, 800 wet, 1000 wet, 1500 wet then moved on to some very fine steel wool, then buffed it and finished it off with some Mother's aluminum polish.
It really brought it to a level that it almost looks like chrome. I was super happy with the results.
I started putting the grille assembly together. Hopefully I can install it on the car this way- usually I install it one piece at a time onto the car but I think this might be the easier way to do it.

I really hope so. I need to diagnose my clutch problem then install a new (used) Muncie. That shouldn't take too long as long as the clutch issue is solved soon.
everything else is pretty much good to go.
I still need to:
- purchase and install the rocker moldings and wheel opening moldings.
- fix my clutch issue and install tranny/driveshaft etc.
- install fenders, hood, grille, etc
- finish up the wiring under the dash
- rear tires installed on 15 Inch steel wheels
of course there's a lot more to do but those are the major items I can think of.

Re: 66 Chevelle: Return of the Aztec

Looking gooood! I think the grill was installed as a unit due to the rivets. Not sure about the filler panel and head light assemblies; but that looks like a good way to go.

It's already turning heads....right here on the forum...

That's the same color I will have mine painted and Brian's looks very true to original. I just might have to drag mine to IA for the paint job...

Agreed. Whomever mixed that paint did a great job! The guy who sprayed it did an OK job too!

Brian,

You may have listed it in the thread already, but what brand of paint is that? The car looks outstanding!
