If you are getting a strong exhaust smell in the interior check your exhaust manifold or header gaskets. It sounds like you have a serious exhaust leak at the engine.

Re: strong exhaust smell

Did you ever get any responses to your exhaust smell post? I picked up a restored 72 Chevelle and I'm getting really bad exhaust into the cabin while I'm driving.

Re: strong exhaust smell

LOL on the skeleton! My '66 had a strong exhaust smell while driving with the windows down but not when they were rolled up. Turned out the PO had installed the trunk weather seal in the wrong orientation. After replacing that gasket correctly with the lip facing away from the inside of the trunk and adjusting the trunk to close bit tighter, no more exhaust smell while driving with the windows down. :-)
