Welcome to TC. By "door skin" I assume you meant the inner door panel and not the outside metal door skin. First, make sure the lock mechanism is not locked. Don't rely on the knob's position (up or down), make sure that you can see that the knob/rod is moving. You can also use the door key to unlock the mechanism (again make sure the action is moving). Next, there's a rod that runs from the open door lever (at the arm rest) to the door latch. It simply moves back and forth, front to rear. Pull the handle up or move that rod forward and see what happens. you should be able to see/feel the lever at the latch that that rod is attached to, make sure it's moving.

While pulling that rod/lever forward give the door a sharp push with your shoulder or foot and see if it opens. If it opens, it's WD-40 time.

Nothing seems to work to open this door...I took off the other doors panel and operated the latch system and tried the same on this door and to no percail...is the only option taking Allan wrench and removing the door striker from inside the door

Re: 72 chevelle door

Push the release latch all the way towards the back. It has to go back to reset before it will open.

Try wrapping a piece of stout wire around the release latch. Wear gloves...it's sharp in there, give it a firm tug as you push in and pull out on the door. Mat be even pull up on the door as you yank the wire.

Maybe the hinges are bad or out of adjustment causing the lock mechanism to bind on the striker.

Does it look like the release bar is moving as far as the other good door?

To remove the latch there are 3 screws you won't be able to get to unless the door is open.

As a last resort pull the allens and see what pans out. Surely latch mayhem as the latch comes apart in pieces.

Did you try lifting up or pushing down - while pulling on the door - while activating the latch? The door could be high or low and hung up on the striker.

Re: 72 chevelle door

If you can see the striker bolt through the lock mechanism, I think it has an inside torks head, you can loosen it a few turns and it may give you some play that may allow you to unlatch the door if it's bound up on the srtiker.

Last resort, if it looks like the head of the striker bolt will clear through the mechanism, you can unscrew it and pull it through the mechanism. Door open. If it doesn't pull through, you'll damage paint when you force the door open. I'm not100% sure that the large threads will pull through the large washer??? so last resort.

Re: 72 chevelle door

A frequent problem with the driver's door is that the pivot for the inside door handle wears out and will not allow the linkage rod to move forward enough to work the latch mechanism. Put vise grips on the linkage rod and pull forward.
Another fix may be to flood the latch mechanism with solvent or light oil. A lot of dirt can collect in that mechanism and cause it to stick.
