Re: El Camino - strip car build :)

If you left in 2nd Gear there is no Shift from 1st to 2nd as you are already in 2nd Gear

Why not Leaving/Launching in 1st ?

Why is the Tach Light on at the End of the 1/4 ? set to low ?? What Rear Gears ???
OR your Engine's Max RPM in Top Gear is reached to soon just before the End of the 1/4
and thus to much Gearing for it
OR you just taking it easy this First Time out with the Car ?

You have a TH400 ? Did you have it Built with a good Shift Kit & Adjusted so you can feel the Change in Gears when you shift it ??

Is there a Trans brake in the Trany ?
if not, and just FootBraking try leaving/Launching off Idle and push your Foot into it slowly to the Floor
then each next time you go up increase the speed of your Foot going to the Floor a little Faster
each time and see what works the Best

Re: El Camino - strip car build :)

The th400 was built in the US by Marks guy , Its full automatic and can be also manually shifted , its a standard fw pattern , if i leave in 2 the 1-2 shift is done by the tranny then i just to shift it i 3rd .
The shift light is set a 6600 so naturally it come on again in high gear , i cross the line at 6900 - 4.10 and 28 tires
Converter is ATI 8inch 5000 stall specific for footbrake.
Definately in the next race i m going to shift it myself Cant wait !!!

Re: El Camino - strip car build :)

Is the BBC built to safely Rev Higher than 6,600 RPM all the time every Shift ?

Post # 191 shows your Engine Dyno #s as
700 HP @ 5,900 RPMs
729 HP @ 6,700 RPMs the last/Highest Reading on the Dyno Sheet

So is it okay with Mark that you will be Hitting the 6,900 RPM everytime you Shift/go down the Track ??

My BBC rarely sees 6,000 RPMs and I never see the Tach Light come on at the End of the 1/4
as it is set for 5,800-5,900 RPMs

I guess your Engine is setup for the 800-1,000 RPMs higher Revving

Re: El Camino - strip car build :)

You will be much happier shifting it manually, make the combination work for you. Your going to be burning up parts otherwise. I have heard, and you should check that the turbo 400 combinations like to be short shifted a little bit 1-2 then your normal shift RPM to 3rd.
Oliver learn you procedures, and practice, practice, practice. Start with going through the water box, burn out, stage, launch, shift, shut down. Sit in the car, and visualize, and practice it in your mind, then on the track. It will become 2nd nature/natural to you.

Re: El Camino - strip car build :)

I played around with the governor on my t400 , got it shifting right around 6500 , did a [email protected] in "drive" , also adjusted the vacuum modulator so it wouldn't shift too early when cruising, otherwise you end up stop/go driving around town in top gear on the converter

in 8 runs all my 60 ft were between 1.56 to 1.58 , there was no difference in leaving in D or 2 gear , probably the tans was shifting in the same point

Doesn't the TH 400 leave in 2nd if manually put there?

i think only if is full manual

my trans is automatic so i believe if you leave in
3 (D ) starts in 1 shifts to 2 then to 3 , this i can confirm because on the return road i can hear all shifts
if you leave in 2 should start in 1 shift to 2 and stay in 2
leave in 1 stay in 1

You are correct. A manual valvebody will pick each gear. If you leave in 2 with an automatic valvebody it will start in 1 and shift to 2 and stay there. Do you know what it is automatically shifting at?

Re: El Camino - strip car build :)

The next big race is coming up at the end of August ...only a few weekends to prepare the car and check everthing. I did not drive the car on the street yet as it has the race seat and harness and open headers and that s a big no no if i get stopped by police

We wanted to hook up the 2step rev limiter and wire it to the brakes . Also i wanted to see what rpm the brakes will hold against the converter. We did also back street test and burnout . Definately fun to hear the car , its a beast ))

Re: El Camino - strip car build :)

So we have a problem with the 2step rev limiter ; it does not limit the rpms !!!

Everything is wired correctly ; arming switch + switch on the roll control and when you press the brakes it should limit the rpm ...the check light on the box works perfectly but it does not limit !! We moved around the dials but nothing .. i dont know why ? It was wired the same way in the chevelle but only to the clutch ... it worked perfect ! Any ideas ? Maybe the box went bad i have the call msd tech line for any troubleshooting

I can hold the car with the brakes to 2000 rpm tops, here the vids
