The Caprice used the factory radiator cooler, the Chevelle used a cooler in front of the radiator. Both car typically ran @ 160 degrees. A typical every week drive was a 200 miles round trip to LA county drag strip through the San Fernando valley, 118 freeway to the 36 freeway which is a 38 mile 6% up hill grade in stop and go traffic in sometimes 105 degree heat, I can remember one time my Chevelle got to 188 degrees in this heat in stop and go traffic. Never did I have any trans or converter problems, my fluid always looked great. My Converters at the time were 8 inch Munsingers designed for low RPM stockers, Buick, Olds, Pontiac, the Caprice would flash 4800 355 small block, the Chevelle would flash 5500. My transmissions were both well built strait cut Turbo 400s. The Caprice best was 11.80s the Chevelle best was 9.86 in 108 degree heat. The Caprice probably saw 9000 miles a year for probably 3-4 years, the Chevelle probably 4000 miles a year. My Caprice could have been much faster with a few changes, wheels, tires, converter, gears.
san fernando valley gets really hot , where the track was even hotter ! the traffic is horrible and you were able to maintain 160 degrees drag race on top of all that and drive home !!! that is amazing ! were those engines you built ?

Re: Intake Swap

If you remove that air spoiler on top of the air cleaner your engine will be happier. Put a factory type lid on there.

Sooooo a solid lid would work better...... smoother air flow?

Air enters the carb from the sides not the top. That lid disrupts flow.

Hmm... I thought air was like electricity and takes the path of least resistance.

Re: Intake Swap

Made it to track yesterday, car ran pretty good considering the heat and humidity, was 97* and 55-75 % humidity, DA was around 4300-4600, ran 7-20, 21, 22, 22, 22, 24,(on a dump) 21, 19, a little tire spin on all runs except the 19 and I broke out by .02 on that one, all in all a good day, won the dash for cash ($100.00) and didn't tear anything up , all 60' were 1.64-66, car just doesn't like the heat.
Likes the dual plane a lot better than the single
