Re: Drag Only Chevelle Build

Impressive build. Seen some great work from small gearhead shops. Keep up the good work. Does your cage need tig welding to be certified ? When you get the lower structure figured out the remainder will follow quickly. Good luck, will be watching picking up new details.

Re: Drag Only Chevelle Build

anyone know what sprng weight would be best on this set up, going to be strut front end, probably going with strange units with a 3" stroke, 4 link rear, small block, and fiberglass front clip, figure it will weigh 2500+ lbs, buddy of mine has 250's on front of big block vega so I was thinking 200-225, or am I thinking wrong.?

Re: Drag Only Chevelle Build

got front strange external double adjustable coil over struts with 300# springs coming from s&w race cars, (spring rate was recommended by them),also strange rear external double adjustable coil over shocks with 130# springs coming from them also, will be installing magnum 4 link from performance engineering, after lots of measuring as these are for a 3" tube and I am using a big web ford housing and the tubes are 3.250 and the round end of the web is 3.5" and the "rounded square" part of the web is 3.9**", we will also be adding a back brace, so that complicates it even more. we got a narrowing jig and wishbone from lead mine products, this will be our first attempt at narrowing a rear end. got body bolted to chassis for fitment, still have to bend rear frame rails and front uppers. Here's a few pics of slow progress.

ps. Wife's (crew chief and team owner) favorite new sayin is "Quit Overthinkin' it and JUST DO IT".

Re: Drag Only Chevelle Build

130's may be a bit heavy but see how it works. I used 130's in my car at almost 3200 lbs.

Re: Drag Only Chevelle Build

Thanks Ray, I thought the 300's were a little much and the 130's a little light, but I've never set one up either, went with those rates as that's what S&W recommended.

Thanks again,

Mac

Re: Drag Only Chevelle Build

I have 138's in the car now since I replaced the springs with Hypercoils. They only sold 125 and 138. I HAD 130's in the car and was a little reluctant to go down to 125's. I know my car is heavy. It was 3170-80 last time I weighed it. So I felt more comfortable with the nominal number being 138. But the car had gone 1.266 in 60' with the old shocks and has been 1.242 with the new double adjustables. For the front, I have no experience with the coil overs. I know they are usually heavier due to the small spring.

Re: Drag Only Chevelle Build

Question; does anyone think I will need a rear anti roll bar, if so I can do that along with the rest of the stuff I am doing to the rear end at this time, got the 4-link brackets all trimmed and squared and level and partially welded yesterday, they were a pain to fit on the big web, had to trim them a little on one side and a lot on the other, I also cut the "square" to square, so now I have a little filling to do also , but ain't no hurdle we can't get over

Re: Drag Only Chevelle Build

I would run an anti-roll

As for hanging the tabs on the rear now.. I would say you need to have the bar mounted/located in the car to understand where the tabs on the rear will need to be mounted.

A little more progress, two boxes in shop full of front and rear suspension parts, also got a pair of old centerline front runners with tires from racing buddy, got plenty to keep us busy now.

Re: Drag Only Chevelle Build

A couple more pics of sloooowww progress , between work and tractors and sprayers and cows and other stuff we got a little bit more done, a little bit.

Looked at springs and they are hypercoils, 300 front and 125 rear.

gonna make a crude jig to hold struts so we can get mounts in correct position on chassis, then when we get this about halfway done we will order parts to fill rear end and then start on rear 4 link suspension.
