OK, My Turn. How Much HP Do You Think My 540 Will Make?

My new 540 is ready to go over at USA Racing Engines in Houston, (The Wop Shop). All I have to do is take the carb and distributor off of my motor to Bruce so he can put her on the dyno next week.

540 cubes, Dart Big M Block, Air Flow Research full CNC 290 Heads, RPM Performer intake, port matched to heads, Edlebrock 800 carb, Hyd Roller, .675 lift, 234-238 at .050, 10 to 1 compression, zero deck, deck plate honed, Morel Lifters, Comp Cams Magnum Pro Rockers, everything assembled to the highest standards.

My goal is a big inch, hard hitting street engine that will run on what's in the pump, idle at 800 with 16 lbs of vacuum, have the torque come in quick and stay flat, and be perfectly compatible with my TCI 6X 6Speed Auto and 3,31 gear, reving to around 6500.

What do you all think?

'67 Chevelle Malibu, Catalina Blue, 540 inch Rat, Air Flow Reasearch 290 CNC Heads heads, Custom Hyd Roller, .675 lift, 234, 244 at .050, Lemons Headers, Holley Multiport Fuel Injection, TCI 6X 6Speed Automatic, 12 bolt Posi Eaton TruTrac, 3:31 Richmond Gears, front and rear power disc brakes, Global West Suspension, etc.

I don't know but that looks like a very well thought out combo for what you want. I hope you have plenty of money set aside for tires. Am looking forward to see what it does on the dyno. Gonna be alot of fun.

Think you will come in around 650hp at 5600. With the dual plane, 800 carb and 234 intake lobe, will be interesting to see if power holds on much over 6000. JMHO

I think you are right, I am hoping that the top HP comes in at a flat 6000, that is what I was shooting for with the head-cam combo.

I have a Victor jr intake, and a 950 carb, but it won't go under the hood with a large enough air cleaner to feed the beast.

The engine in the car now really gets my attention when I nail it through the gears. I am hoping the 540 scares me

Re: OK, My Turn. How Much HP Do You Think My 540 Will Make?

That is going to be a torque monster. I really wonder if you're going to get enough air with the intake and that carb past 6000 rpm. Im going to agree with Joe, but I do think it's going to make like 700 ft lbs though. The torque at like 3000 rpm is going to be insane.

Re: OK, My Turn. How Much HP Do You Think My 540 Will Make?

We never ran mine on a dyno, used the Rerher Morrison Street 540 as an example of the motor we built though. RM advertises [email protected], running Dart 310 head, single plane and a 244/254, .650, 114LSA cam. Few years back Jim dyno'd the 555 with hyd roller and tipped into the low 700's with a cam in the mid 250's. You run it and see what it does. Might be spot on for what you want. I think the intake will support it to 6000, just think the cam may need another 10* duration. These big motors just seem to swallow cam duration.

Re: OK, My Turn. How Much HP Do You Think My 540 Will Make?

I think you have a great street engine there, should be in the mid-600 range as far as HP, but IMO with the relatively small cam (for the displacement), carb and intake combo I think it will be done by 6k rpm.

Re: OK, My Turn. How Much HP Do You Think My 540 Will Make?

I think that's a perfect street motor, and the cam is a nice choice for the street. Although these big motors do swallow cam, the dont seem to swallow all the bigger cam negatives as well. That motor will likely see 6000 rpms <5% during its use, so cam, air cleaner size, etc wont really be an issue.

Let's talk about that carb though...

Re: OK, My Turn. How Much HP Do You Think My 540 Will Make?

yea the carb is going to be the problem, its gonna pull lots of vacuum in the upper rpm. with your cubes.
borrow a 1000 or dominator from Bruce to see what it does.
I'd also do a single plane to kill off some low end tq and help power.
I can see 650hp & 700tq, if everything is right.

Intake/Carb will bring the numbers down a bit IMO...but a great street engine for sure....cant hook that much power on the street anyways haha

It'll be civilesed at part throttle/cruise, especially with that transmission.
But its gonna be torque city when you hit the loud pedal!
