Carb and intake suggestions for my 540.

I have a engine that has been on a stand for 10 years. I was going to build it as a race engine but there are no more tracks on Long Island so I am putting it into my GTO. It is a 540, 10-1 compression. Edelbrock heads that have work done to them. The cam is a Crane HR3182s14ig part number 139661. I am using Hooker 2 1/8 headers for it. It has a 3500 stall converter with a turbo 400. Carb and intake suggestions. I want to keep it under the stock hood. I have a Super victor for it and a 1050 dominator but that won't fit under the hood. This car will be used for the street.

67 GTO more Chevelle than Pontiac.

Re: Carb and intake suggestions for my 540.

As far as carbs go a quick fuel 950 (4150 style) will work fine and comes in a 4150 and and dominator bolt patterns. The problem is the Dominator manifold is going to be too tall - just in general. So I would look for a manifold that is a 4150 style. It will need to breath as this is a big motor. I run a 950 QF with the Dominator 454R but I have a cowl hood for and extra 3 inches of room. Not sure what they did for hood clearance on GTOs but I know they did have a tall deck height but manifolds were flat.

Re: Carb and intake suggestions for my 540.

If you do the 4150 with Dominator base you need to make your own bracket using the 4150 bracket cutting it and shoring it up with a piece of U shaped aluminum (bolt hole spacing is different by like 3/8 of an inch. The dominator bracket can not be modified to fit the 4150 as all sorts of stuff is in the way.

All installed. You will need the Lokar cable stuff so things will work better also I used their gas pedal as my 1965 Chevelle had the old bar linkage.

Rpm Air Gap and a Holley 1000HP. Buddy made 802hp with the GM Rpm version (same without the gap) and the Holley 1000.

I was thinking a 950 or 1000 4150. I am still looking at intakes. the one you suggested has oval ports.

67 GTO more Chevelle than Pontiac.

Re: Carb and intake suggestions for my 540.

Look up the intake manifold carb mounting height, you might be surprised how tall a dual plane is compared to your current single plane. The measurements can be found on the manufacturers website as well as summit racing.

My 540 uses a 4150 flange Vic Jr and 1000 cfm pro systems carb, this all fits under a stock 71 Chevelle Hood.

B433 who is a member here had a modified Vic Jr under the stock flat hood on a 66 Chevelle. I believe he had the carb pad angle milled to mimic a factory intake to gain need clearance.

Good luck with your project

Re: Carb and intake suggestions for my 540.

The 7562 performer rpm air gap rect port has a 5.22" carb pad height. Your 2927 Super Victor is 6.2". A 2907 Victor 454R/2807 Victor 454R CNC is 5.9". Holley Strip Dominator 300-5 is 5.465".

I would have a 1050ish 4150 style carb built, talk to jmarkaudio on here.

Re: Carb and intake suggestions for my 540.

My 502 had an RPM air-gap oval port intake with a half inch spacer (for PCV tube), 4150 carb, and 3"-1.5" drop filter and just fit under the hood of my 66SS. When I built the 540, I used a Vic Jr intake. The measurements looked close, but the Air-gap is lower in the front of the carb pad than the rear. The Vic Jr is not. Well, Vic Jr didn't fit. The front of the air cleaner hit the hood. Ended up going to a steel cowl hood. The 540 would have fit with the Air-gap, which is what I will use if I decide I want the stock SS hood back on the car.

Re: Carb and intake suggestions for my 540.

I think I am going to go with a 1000 cfm 4150 base and a Holley Strip dominator. That has a height of 5.5.

67 GTO more Chevelle than Pontiac.

Re: Carb and intake suggestions for my 540.

I just finished a pump gas 540 for a 1970 Chevelle with OEM SS hood. I couldn't bring myself to stick an RPM AG on it, so I cut a 2° angle on a Vic Jr 454R. Carb pad is now 5.81" vs an AG 5.22". The angle cut gained .5" at front of 14" filter iirc.
