What's up with this cam?

GM 454 HO cam.
Seems like there is quite a spread between intake and exhaust duration? Wonder how it would work on a oval port 396?

This steel roller is for the 502 and 454 H.O.crate engines.

The duration at .050" tappet lift (intake/exhaust) is 211/230;

Lift with 1.7:1 rocker ratio (intake/exhaust) is 510/540.

Valve lash is zero/zero

Lobe centerline is 112 degrees

Re: What's up with this cam?

I think it will work fine in a oval port 396.
Used a couple in ovalport 454ā€™s and they worked great.
I guess there are cams that will out perform it in hp but if its a street car nothing wrong with it.
In the past they was around 130-150$(Same with the zz502 cam) new but the price has gone up.

Re: What's up with this cam?

+ should work perfect with Morel street or gaterman lifters and springs with 140 seat 360 open so little stress on valve train, you could even get away with long slot rocker arms even though I would prefer roller rocker arms.

I thought it might be ok for a 396 the 502/502 cam would probably be ok too but I wanted something that would work with overdrive and lower cruising rpm's.

That rules out the zz502 cam I think. But the ho cam should probably work fine? Never used with od just in cars with th 400 and 3.08 rear gears but both was fullsize.

I might give it a try. I have access to a take out for not much money. Going to run my Johnson lifters on it and I have a set of the old Comp stainless steel roller rockers to go with it. Going to use 1 3/4 headers, cast iron q-jet intake, q-jet carb. Not sure on compression yet as I need to check it once I get it apart.

Think that will work great!

540 is still in the car and running. Car runs hard but I'm still not satisfied with it. I'm getting to the point in my life I just want to drive it and not fiddle with it. This 396 is the numbers matching engine for the car. I am going to put it back to more of a original situation and might even consider selling it in the future. I have had it for 20 years and it might be time to move on to something else.

Gm usually does that because of a number of things, one being a corked up exhaust and if there is a poor flowing exhaust port and that is a pretty nice grind. Most of the time if I have a head that has a really good exhaust flow to about .650 lift then I will use a single pattern cam. If you want to make it with more intake lift them just add 1.8 rockers. Sometimes it helps and sometimes it does not.

Re: What's up with this cam?

That should liven up the "little"396 quite nicely.
Exhaust note should be entertaining as well.

It’s a great street cam. Huge torque and really good power.
