454 ls5 heads cam !!

Hey all.... have a 72 chevelle with a 454 ls5, pretty much a stock motor. Just redid the fuel system(edelbrock pump regular ect) msd 6al, victor jr intake, Holley street H.P. 750 headman headers. This is a street car (with drag radials lol) that is begging for more power honestly. No idea what head/cam combo I should go with to squeeze out as much as I can for a reliable street car. 4 speed m20 12 bolt. Any help would be appreciated

Re: 454 ls5 heads cam !!

Well could help you some but you bought a too small of a carb to really get much more out of that size motor. Your budget will lead you in the right direction. So you know my little 427 l88 shortblock with oval port heads is using all of the modified holley 830. You should have got at least the hp 950 carb. Flotek 290 is a very nice budget head. Afr has the 265 head but more money. Cam you could look at something like comp extreme energy 242/248 or herburts cbr248.

Nice car, just switch out that big single plane intake for an Air Gap, it will make a difference in performance. When I can build a peanut port 454 into a tire burner that run 11's what you have should be easy. The heads you have are fine, comp cam 280H or something like that and the dual plane will be a tire shredder.

So, what heads do you have on this motor? Let's start there first?

Figure out where this engine will spend most of it's life and start your build from there.

Better heads that'll get you 10:1 compression, a good roller cam and a bigger carburetor. Talk to Chris Straub at https://straubtechnologies.com/

Better to talk to mr jones at vortecpro. Or even my guy up here in canada. Getting a quote from many and going from there is always good advice.

What are your realistic expectations and how much do you want to spend?
More real power = more $ spent
But deal with reputable folks who aren't "at their first rodeo".
Some good people/names above have been mentioned in earlier replies above.
Good luck.

Thanks for the responses. Honestly it’s a street car that I’d like to take to the track on occasion. I know people swear by the dual plane, but I actually noticed much more top end with the victor jr when I put it on about three weeks ago. The local speed guys here all say aluminum heads and a bigger cam but they’re mostly ford guys lol.

Forgot to mention... Im not too sure on the motor but it is a 72 block and seems to be pretty much stock. Probably rebuilt to factory specs a while ago.

I may be dreaming... but I’d like to run 11:80-11:90’s. I have 275 et street r’s that hook unbelievably... probably because I’m not making enough power lol. And I’d like to be around 4K for the parts

Re: 454 ls5 heads cam !!

What rear gear do you have ? Your heads are GREAT if it's going to be a street car ! The cam that you have in a stock LS5 is pathetic and you will make great gains by just improving that !
I agree with the dual plane as others have said, it's been proven on a dyno time and time again, unless your planning on a high RPM motor the dual plane out performs the single in the range where your motor will operate . Think combination !!! Pick the right cam and hang on.

Re: 454 ls5 heads cam !!

Performer rpm air gap intake, and a step nose hyd roller will gain you a lot. I would have looked at the AED 950HO carb instead. 750 body and 850 baseplate. Great carb.

Let us know what casting number heads.

And if you are running the msd distributor as it comes out of the box there is quite a gain to be seen by tuning it.

Take the valve cover off and get the casting number on the head, so we know what you're working with
