Stock Vortec head 406 goes 11.60's

1st. time out this year with a 406 I had lying around so I decided to use it. Put some bone stock (except for a 3 angle valve job) on it and at the end of the day the car was running in the 11.60's, even had a dual plane intake too boot. Sure was good getting out again with the car. Put the 30" slick on the car and it told me I have too much gear, maybe that's why my BBC did not work out well last year.

More info on car and combo?

Seems very good! That is small runner like 170 right? What is the valve size?

Re: Stock Vortec head 406 goes 11.60's

Interesting what is the rest of the build . I always thought for the street no more than a 200 runner and a decent cam for a 400The other thing money is best spent on good heads versus changing of the rods to 5.7 or 6.0. lots of guys frown away from the 4 bolt main block because its weaker in the main webs . true but good machine work on the block and keeping the revs under55/5800 it will last a long time. Build the engine for torque that's what moves the vehicle and let the H/P be whatever it is. Torque rules the streets. When I had my shop I built many real good street beaters that lasted a long time under abuse, I would riddle the customer with questions and build to maximize what they had versus what they were going to have or want. I had many happy and repeat customers all gearheads. The other service I offered with every build I gave them 2 hours of my time at start up to make sure everything went smoothly cam break in etc because they were all F/T builds . I built race engines too with rollers and big money parts. My bread and butter was regular hi quality work for repair shops service stations and some work for other machine shops that they could not do. Alex

Really interested to see what car and the weight of it.

That is a very good time for such a small runner head with probably a 2.02 valve at best.

Race car is a 3400 lbs Camaro. Bone stock heads wight down to the 1.94 intake and 1.5 exhaust valve. Just my own 3 angle seat valve job with all valves lapped in.

.030 400 flat top piston
Stock Vortec 906 heads, stock rockers and pressed in studs.
Elgin 1165p Hyd cam
GM Performance Dual plane intake
850 A/D Mighty Demon
1 5/8" Headers.
MSD 7AL2 and Billet Distributor.

Next set of heads are a set of 062's with some porting still stock valve size but were in the 250I/190E flow range @.550 lift. Goal is to see it this can go 11 flat with a 170cc runner heads.

3400 lbs helps alot, but this is really impressive...you have a 30" slick too....what gear and whats the rpm at the line?

Seems to be very budget friendly build too.
Stock 2 bolt block and crank? Aftermarket rods?
Impressed by such a smaller runner and valve for such a low lift and high duration cam.
Stock rocker, pressed in studs, small headers....
Pump gas?

First off, sincere congrats!!!

What kind of gear and converter are you running? What's your MPH? That's VERY impressive.

Now, if you want to go fast with 170cc SBC heads, look at the Edelbrock eTec 170s. I love mine.

When you look at my signature info, keep in mind that I'm a full weight Chevelle with every power robbing accessory other than A/C.

You're at least 400 pounds lighter than me.

Lastly, FWIW, I'd enjoy this combo for a while. That's a great, mild build.

Also, have you tuned your carb and distributor at all?

It's a 4 bolt block, GM 5.7 rods with Milodon bolts. but it does have a scat crank in it. The car is on 100 oct fuel as the cam being a 106° can be somewhat detonation prone at times. I think when I ran the numbers it was 11 to 1. Total bucks into this engine inc. the Mighty Demon is just over $900. The 30" tires did slow my 60ft a touch but that may be due to track prep more than the tire. All this stuff was just sitting around the garage and no one here will touch a SBC anymore with the LS craze. Best part was on the last pass I got to smoke a C6 Z06 as I torched him out of the hole so bad he never caught up. I really enjoyed that race. Makes me proud of the little SBC that could.

Re: Stock Vortec head 406 goes 11.60's

There are still a lot of 12 second and faster SBC running around. Always will be.

They're not exotic or new....but they work. Depending on what you currently have, a 383 with modern heads and a mid 220ish (or less) HR cam is still a cheap and easy way to get to REAL 450 HP/TQ.

WOW! You had the balls to use a 4 bolt 400 SBC? Big set you have there.

I have one of those two, but am even sacred to dump money into a street build on those things.

Re: Stock Vortec head 406 goes 11.60's

Is the MPH, rear-end gear, and converter still secret?

Do you want to break it down and apply the math? The beauty of this build is, there was no money spent, a drag test followed with a modification of the heads, followed by another drag test, something I can sink my teeth in.
