505 returns to the dyno

About 16 monthes ago I had my 505 on the dyno. Had a bit of a circus by the time we got some solid numbers.

https://www.chevelles.com/forums/18-...other-one.html

Heading back tomorrow for round 2. This all started with a rear main leak. Had to pull the engine to address that. Soooooooo ....... while it was out I thought it would be a good idea to upgrade the FI as I felt it was running out of air with the Fitech Meanstreet. Soooooo ...... as long as the intake was off and the pan was off it seemed to me that it would make sense to change the cam too.

Now it is back together with a new newfangled Straub cam, Edelbrock Pro Flo 4, and hopefully repaired rear main leak.

Thinking tomorrow will be interesting!!

How much difference between the first cam and the one in the engine now?

The rebuild sounds rowdy! Looking forward to the results.

I've had to put springs in mine after the build. Nothing as bad as your issue. Car picked up everywhere after the upgrade...

Re: 505 returns to the dyno

Had a successful session on the dyno. The Pro Flo 4 is working awesome. Able to hold rock steady AFR's from 2800 RPM all the way to 6500 RPM. Timing adjustments were easy, quick, and spot on. Being able to make adjustments while the operator is doing his thing really speeds up and clarifies testing. Arrived at the facility at 9 AM, hooked up, fired up, tested, tuned, and loaded up by 1 PM.

I showed up with 36° total advance, 12.8:1 AFR. We went to 38°, lost ground, went 34° and gained over 36°. Then tried going to 12.4:1 AFR, it didn't like that either. By looking at the plugs we didn't feel going leaner was in the cards. So I left with 34° timing and 12.8:1 AFR making [email protected] 6400 and 603 lb ft torque @ 4900 RPM. All testing on 91 octane fuel.

Was I expecting more, well, yes, but it is easy to get caught up in the internet numbers and expect the stars as well as the moon.

Will this thing be a hoot in my car, I have to think it will be! Now to wedge this thing back in the Chevelle

Oh, and by the way, I seem to have fixed the oil leak!!

Re: 505 returns to the dyno

What headers did you test with?
A few years back I was able to compare 1 7/8 to 2 1/8. The larger primary tubes were good for 20+ hp everywhere it mattered.

Very nice numbers!
How much hp difference was there between 34 degrees and 36 degrees of timing?

Re: 505 returns to the dyno

Sorry about the bad luck with the springs. I'm concerned as I just bought a
set of howards 98885 for an upcoming project. Did howards say anything? Give
you a refund? Be nice to know what kind of a company we are dealing with when people have problems. I have a 427 l88 bottom end with oval port top end that makes some nice power at 580 with stock ported heads and flat tappet cam. I follow the 427 stuff and noticed that you cam guy had asimilar l88 427 with afr heads that made 671horsepower. Just wondering why your down to a 427 and seems the howards made more tq and hp then the new bigger cam. You old thread posted you made 620 horsepower at 5500 RPM and 620 Lb. ft. torque at 4700 RPM with no tuning. But on you chart with tuning, you peak lb ft is 602. And at the 5500 around 610 horsepower. So seems
something is costing you power on the new motor. I would think this would
have been 700 plus horsepower and 650 plus torque all day long.

12 hp peak. But torque at 2800 was up 22 lb. ft. with less timing
