Bbc assembly

Can anyone recommend some good books for engine assembly tips and tricks? Specifically 454 and 496 engines.
Thanks

Re: Bbc assembly

"How To Hot Rod Big Block Chevy's" is sort of the Bible, but I wouldn't consider it an assembly blueprint. A great read if you haven't though.

Re: Bbc assembly

I got the David Vizard book. It was a good read and all, gave me some ideas. After I read the book, I then searched those same topics on this site. Some ideas were maybe not necessary or not as good as the book says. So reading a book is good, but the guys on this site are the BBC masters. Use the search key, and you'll find everything you've ever wanted to know. Another good option is VortecPro and his youtube videos. He goes into some pretty good detail about doing things right. I can watch them over and over and seems I still learn something new each time. Good luck on your build.

This site has been a wealth of knowledge but I'll be the first to admit I don't know everything. I'm always trying to do better and its hard to search a topic you didn't realize was an issue.

Thanks for all the suggestions

Re: Bbc assembly

I don't know how recently (if at all) the Vizard rebuild books have been updated, and it may not have all the latest trick ideas, but I have an older copy and if you are rebuilding a Mark IV and do what it says, at least you know it will run and not blow up. After almost forty years of doing it, I still have my copies handy for reference when I assemble an engine.

Re: Bbc assembly

My favorite. It's a good balance between mild to wild builds. Well written, great pics, excellent explanations and how to's.

Do you find these books have mostly the same info, or does each book have some of its own value? Maybe I need a couple books besides the Vizard books.

Re: Bbc assembly

Big block chevys are brutally simple in their design. Chevy designed the oiling system to be first class.

Where you run into problems is when you start reading about everything that is wrong with them. Your typical internet Forum will, sooner or later, give you so many things that you have to fix that you wonder how the darned things ever got down the road without self destructing.

Just about any rebuild book will give you the basic bearing clearances and torque values. Adhere to these using quality parts, and you wont go wrong.

Exactly what are your concerns?
