Battery thoughts?

Not sure if this is the right place for this, but I think I may be needing a new battery soon.
I have an optima that is roughly 8 years old and it may be dying. It holds a charge of 11.9(which is considered dead) but will still BARELY start the car.
My alternator is in great shape, it holds voltage right at 14.7, with everything on 14.3. I put the battery charger(rated for AGM) on it and it went to 12.4, then after about 2 hours it went back to 11.9 and has sat there for about 3 weeks now.

What batteries are you guys using? I have thought about going with an Odyssey?

Thanks!

Have you load tested it yet?
I’ve only used off the shelf batteries with a tender on them with no issues.

I see we have put some Optima batteries in some equipment here with lack luster results as well. Not worth it in my opinion.

I have not, I don't have a load tester, but I can turn all the lights, fans etc on and see what it does.

I just buy the Interstate blems now, $39 bucks, can't beat it and last as long as most other batteries.

Re: Battery thoughts?

I have started buying the Walmart Everstart Maxx batteries. They are $40 to $50 cheaper than the Duralast Gold batteries at Autozone and have the same warranty (and I have a feeling that they are coming off of the same assembly line, just with a different label). They have been working just fine.

Re: Battery thoughts?

I have never had issues with Optima. I have them in all my cars including wife's mini van. the one in my cutlass is probably 9-10 years old. They sit on the trickle charger most of the time and they never failed me yet.

IMO if it lasted 8 years on a car that doesn't get driven a lot, you got your moneys worth.

Re: Battery thoughts?

I bought an Odessey battery for 1 of my Harleys once, lasted as long as any cheap battery so I wouldn't spend $$ on one, I put a Duracell from Sams Club in my 68 a few years ago and it's fine

That is honestly how I feel.
Especially for 2 of those years it only got drive ONCE each year.

I also drained it twice..once due to a dead alternator and the second due to not having enough alternator both times it came back.

I dont know what I will go with yet. I want a decent battery so it can really spin the engine over.

Re: Battery thoughts?

I've got two Optima red tops in my 2004 Silverado 2500 Duramax diesel pickup. I installed them in January 2009 so they're almost eleven years old. Original Delco batteries lasted five years one month.

Re: Battery thoughts?

I do like the oddesey batteries, that may be what I go with unless I find a deal on an Optima.
I want to stay with AGM.
