66 bbc traction/60 ft times

I have a 66 malibu coupe with a stout 454/4L80 3:73 12 bolt and 3500 stall. 90/10 frt shocks. Just bought the MT STREET ET's S/S (255/60/15) and I'm getting it to launch straight now but best 60 ft times are around 2.2. Have bad fish tailing with PSI around 18 too 20 but can launch straight at 22 to 24 but can't get it to hook.

Any advice on where to go next after slicks to lower 60 ft time would be appreciated.

How much travel does your front end have before your front tires just leave the ground?

I have a set of spare 2.73 gears and a stock stall I might part with, that would help lol

What cam, out of curiosity?

Love the cam, but much better suited to 2.73 than 3.73 in a BBC. You're making a ton of torque, with a large stall and reasonably deep gear. You've created a tire shredder.

BillyGman will point you in the right direction chassis wise.

If it were me, I'd be looking for less gear or a larger cam, maybe a little bit of both?

Re: 66 bbc traction/60 ft times

yeah, been thinking I under estimated the low end torque of this motor. this is my first bbc after having sbc's in my other cars of the past.

how about an all out racing slick instead of the ETs?

Wouldn't be a problem for me to swap to a 3:08 or 3:31

I believe I measured to the top edge of the front wheel well then put a floor jack under cross member jacked it up till the tires just came off ground.
I think the magic number was at least 5/6".

Re: 66 bbc traction/60 ft times

Do you have video, either “in car” with the camera pointing straight ahead or from someone standing behind at a 3/4 angle that shows the car and ground from the burnout through staging?

What track, what was the air temperature, day or night, how long between runs, was it a class with all street cars?

Re: 66 bbc traction/60 ft times

Hi Steve
First those 255/60/15 Tires are to small IMHO

What have you done to the Old Stock Suspension ?

Here is a list of what I have done to my 67 to make her run in the mid 11s so far ;
By buying great parts from https://www.umiperformance.com/home/...-67-gm-a-body/
FRONT
1. replaced the Stock Control Arms with these UMI Perf 64-72 GM A-Body Tubular Upper & Lower Front A-Arm Kit # 403133
make sure the Control Arm Nuts are not to tight after so that the Arms are loose/move easily & Double Nut if needed
2. UMI Perf 64-72 GM A-Body Tie Rod Adjusters # 2103
and from JEGs
3. replaced the old Stock Coil Springs with Moroso # 47195 250 lb Trick Springs http://www.jegs.com/i/Moroso/710/47195/10002/-1
with a Rubber Spacer under them JEGs # 555-60830 1" Lift x 4"ID x 6"OD/U-CrossSection http://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS-Performan...60830/10002/-1
4. Comp Eng 3 Way Shocks# 2610 Set at 80/20 http://www.jegs.com/i/Competition-En.../2610/10002/-1
5. replaced the front Manual Drum Brakes with SSBC # A123 Conversion Kit and Longer Studs
6. Front Street/Track Wheels & Tires = JEGs SportStars#66062 1 piece Alum 15”x7” BS 4” / Lug Nuts Billet Sp ET # 999980 /
Cooper StarFire SF 340 P205/70R/15”... TreadWidth 5.59” /SideWallsWidth 8"/ Dia 26.28"

2. UMI Perf 64-72 GM A Body Solid Front and Rear Sway Bar Kit # 403534
3. UMI Perf Rear Frame Cross Brackets
4. replaced the old Stock Coil Springs with new Moog Stock type ones and installed these Air Lift 1000 Air Bags # 60744 in them
at the Track you put air in them to force the Tires into the pavement & make the car Launch straight 10-15 lbs Pass / 0 - 5 lbs Driver
5. Rear Wheels/Tires for Street/Track JEGs SportStars# 66086 1 pieceAlum 15”x10” BS 5.5” / Lug Nuts Billet Sp ET # 999980

Re: 66 bbc traction/60 ft times

Ask 10 people and you will get 10 different answers.
Here's mine.
There are a few ways to go about this depending on the look you are trying to achieve.
You can make stock appearing parts work well with some modifications or spend a bunch of money on aftermarket parts.
Your choice, depending on what appearance you want and how deep your pockets are.

First you need to get different tires.
Do you want street legal tread?
You need to get as much tire under it as possible. (taller the better)
I run the M/T #3554 (28/11.50-15 bias), but I also have mini tubs.

Springs, get the lightest spring rate factory A-body Moog's front and rear. ( if memory serves me Buick Skylark 6 cyl.)
Stay away from drag springs on a street car.

Front; Good adjustable shocks, and either remove the sway bar or widen the front bushing mounts so it pivots easily.

Rear; Box the control arms (or aftermarket), set the I/C as best you can with the ride height, good D/A shocks, and a real ARB.
Not one of these over rated sway bars they pass off as an ARB.

The air bags route helps and is cheaper than an ARB, but it tightens up the suspension movement when it attempts to prevents body roll.
The ARB is superior hands down.

Any other changes will involve some pretty heavy welding and fabrication.

Re: 66 bbc traction/60 ft times

B433 will chime in soon. I have seen his 66 run. Great launches and 60' times. We talked and I did some of the things he did. Now my 69 launches straight as an arrow and hooks hard. Next year a new convertor and better 60' for me.
