70 Chevelle cam change w engine in car

Hey all - Planning a winter project here. My Chevelle has a fairly weak 454 and it needs a little pick me up. Currently its a 86 454 w peanut ports, mild cam, air gap and 650 carb. I picked up a set of closed chamber Vortec heads with some bowl work and upgraded springs and hardware, voodoo Hydraulic FT cam 60203 227/230 @.050 , .542/.554, Quick fuel SS 830 carb, new pushrods and rockers, etc.. It has hooker headers (i believe 2") and 2 1/2" exhaust too. My plan is to pull the heads and cam in the car...am I nuts? Or should I pull the engine? I know if I pull the engine I cant just leave the rest alone. Was hoping for a relatively quick and budget type upgrade.

If I were to do this in car, I'm guessing grill might have to come out for cam access. Also, looks like the oil pan will need to be dropped a bit, and I can only imagine these headers are going to be a bear to get in and out. Any other road blocks you can think of? I've done this before on Mopars, but my first Chevelle.

Thanks for any pointers!

The center support where the hood release is located. I removed the engine mount bolts so I can pivot the engine to one side or the other.

Your just jealous because you can't hear the voices!

Easy job. Done many this way. Remove radiator and possibly hood release. Get a 2 piece timing cover to ease future cam changes in car. The hardest part will probably be getting the distributor back in. Set timing mark at #1 and mark intake and distributor for reference. Or put tape on the firewall and mark dist location there.

Stop questioning yourself and just do it. Lots of help here if needed. You might put progress reports here for us to follow and offer suggestions.

Tony,
Camshaft is 23" long. That should give you an idea if you want to measure.

the worst part will be lifting the heads off the block and over the fender. lol I have the same cam, you will like it.

There's nothing wrong with being stupid as long as you know you're stupid, it's when you're stupid and don't know it that you become dangerous.

I was thinking the same thing Getting too old for that stuff. LOL
I would definitely pull the hood off and get it out of the way.

Don't lift the heads over the fender. Stand between engine and core support and place them on a table. Help is advisable.

Cam is 23" but don't forget the length of the handle if using one so you can prelube on a bench.

Re: 70 Chevelle cam change w engine in car

You will have to take the oil pan off for a new gasket. Don't forget to change the filter as the prelube can clog them. Break in oil also.

When I changed iron heads in the car my front end/dog house was off and still used a cherry picker to lift the second head after killing my back on the first head then used the cherry picker to reinstall the 063 heads, also used it to lift the PP head I used as a guide for the Isky piston valve notch tool, IIRC one side of engine MM had to be involved and raise the engine to get the header in, DRV side I think
