454 shim head gasket

Curious to know if a shim head gasket can be used on an '86 block w Vortec heads? I've heard certain gaskets might be an issue with these heads. The compression benefit of the shim gasket would be nice, be definitely want a good leak free seal first and foremost. Thanks in advance for any info.

Should be fine Tony. Call Felpro and ask them if there shim gasket will work with those vortecs.

Currently undergoing a metal work to remove all rust, if I ever get there.

What is the quench distance now, and what will it be after the gasket change? If it ISN'T right, expect problems in a lot of different areas.

I dont know the quench distance. Currently an '86 engine w peanut port heads, w cam and intake change. I can only guess that the pistons are factory stock. Havn't pulled the old PP heads yet. What kind of problems are we talking?

Surface finish on OE SBC heads is probably not good enough for a shin gasket. Not sure about BBC heads.

My heads are brand new and the surface looks freshly machined. Haven’t verified trueness but they “look” very good

They should be fine. The gasket has a silicone coating on it
