I had a buddy who did the exact same thing.

That's a drastic change for absolutely no difference in ET. But, given it was a high torque, low rpm street engine with a 3000 converter, it all makes sense. Crazy but certainly a learning occasion!

Re: LS6, Turbo 400 and a 3:31 gear.. was it done??

May not help you much but my engine is basically an LS6 with a Straub Hyd roller cam in a 69 Camaro. I went from 3:31 to 3:73 to 4:11. I wasnít happy until the 4:11ís. Sure itís miserable on the highway [email protected] 60mph but I donít really care. Itís great cruising around. Those heads need some rpm to get working. Itís a blast.

Re: LS6, Turbo 400 and a 3:31 gear.. was it done??

Thanks RP930..

Sure it helps...

It's a response to all parts of the equation. Cubic inches, square port heads, Gears, Transmission and cam used....and exhaust. I just happen to have all the above except the cam.
I have 3:31's in the car but have a 12 bolt 4:11 rear end for the other Chevelle I could rob off it if needed.

Tell me more about the cam.
How it sounds...and particularly what rpm it idles at in gear at a red light. Do you think it idles well enough to run ac?

...and does it still have 14" tires or?

I'd like to have highway gears....but I've driven 4:11 /454 wreckers all over Texas and beyond.

I didn't think much of the rpm then...because I had to have the power.
(I may be spoiled now though..lol).

Thanks...Stan

Indeed...but I'm not sure what I learned?? It doesn't make much sense does it?

It sounds like this. Idles about 875 in gear. The video is fairly cold and probably about 900. It should work with a/c but not sure what vacuum it will have. I have about 9.5 but live at 6000í. Love the cam though. Chris made it a snap to install.

And yes 14Ē

rp930, your car sounds great! I would like to hear it go from idle to WOT and back. If you have any video of that, please post it up!

Thanks rp...nothing like a good video.

I spoke to Chris last week...he referred to that cam as the big brother to the 280-294-9.

For him to make a recommendation that was dead on...he needed to know how much difference the porting work made on my heads.

I'm not sure where to get heads flow tested in Ft. Worth though. I may just buy the cam and take my chances after seeing and hearing this video....providing I go with 4:10's.

That idles and well and sounds great. Nice car by the way.

The ls5 and ls6 had 500 ft/lbs of torque.Ls6 made its horsepower when the revs came up.Not user friendly buzzing around at 6000 rpm on the street. My ls5 suits me fine.331 gears are nice all around gears.Your not chasing many hellcats or gt500 around with an ls6 either unless its a drag package.

Re: LS6, Turbo 400 and a 3:31 gear.. was it done??

Yeah...I hate messing with this motor...

That's what I get for changing my first plan and buying another car .
It was a steal of a deal since it had a crappy running 1968 model 396.

I just couldn't resist the thing...I'd call it a body shop car. Who ever put it together was a great body man and painter. The body is laser straight....but the engine and all mechanicals are poorly done and has no power....so he wasn't much of a mechanic.

Re: LS6, Turbo 400 and a 3:31 gear.. was it done??

I may try to scrounge up another 4 bolt block and a set of heads and start over...
I should have built a lower rpm 496 torque monster, and I considered it ...but I just liked the idea of a stock LS6 better at the time.

I have to admit that's mighty tempting. I do quite a bit of highway driving since I live on the skirs of the big city. But I've got other stuff that's better geared for highway cruises.

If so, and was "as delivered" how did it drive and or perform.
Dude, that's 50 years ago ? I think it's unanimous: it was dam*ed fast !

I would guess within .25 seconds of the fastest LS6 which was probably a 4 speed or a 3.73 geared turbo 400.
