Changing cams in the 540. I have about 800 miles on these Johnsons and the rollers seem to have a strange wear pattern. Rollers feel smooth and I can't catch a fingernail or anything but the wear pattern worries me. Running a billet cam with springs set at 175 on the seat 400 open.

I don't see anything to worry about. Don't worry, be happy.

Re: Johnson lifter wear pattern on rollers

Probably little dirt that made some minor wear. How Did the cam look?

Re: Johnson lifter wear pattern on rollers

Looks like the wheels have seen some debris, hard to tell if it matters.
If you cant catch a nail run them imho.

Are you running a plugged oil bypass?

Re: Johnson lifter wear pattern on rollers

It could be dirt but I don't think that's it. I had the engine apart last winter and I cleaned everything about a bazillion times before assembly. I also changed the oil after driving it about 10 miles and cut the filter open. I changed the oil again at 400 miles and again cut oil filter open. The by pass is plugged. There was some tracking on the cam. It also feels smooth but looks similar to the lifter pictures. I will take a couple pictures of the cam in a bit

Re: Johnson lifter wear pattern on rollers

There is nothing wrong with your lifters. No dirt or debris either. Everything I have taken apart in the last 40 years look similar. Anything you use and run for a while will look the same.

Seriously?
Perfectly normal.

Re: Johnson lifter wear pattern on rollers

My 489s Morel lifters and cam with around 20 000 miles was told by Chris my marks was from debris. When it was apart for inspection and valve spring check, went back together again lifters on same kines since I reused everything.
Thought yours looked similar? Mine looks better in real life vs the pictures and you cant feel the marks on either the lifter wheels or cam or catch a nail.
My bypass is also blocked engine but it has eaten two bronze tip fuelpump pushrods.

The second lobe on first picture looks strange?
Almost looks pitted and heatmarks?

Re: Johnson lifter wear pattern on rollers

I sent the pictures to Johnson yesterday and received a reply back from their Product Manager just now. He also said everything looked fine.

So you are changing it already?? You have to let me know how it works. I got my car on the road on saturday. Does quite well, but 6th is nearly useless--5th is perfect. 6th is only good for 70+
