Holley Fuel Pump Gushing Fuel

I have what is basically a brand new fuel pump. Has about 3 hours of run time on it. There is fuel gushing from the aft end of the cylindrical shaped boss that runs front to back and for lack of a better term is part of the top cap. Does this mean it has ruptured an internal diaphragm? It is the same model as in the link.

Re: Holley Fuel Pump Gushing Fuel

Sounds like a ruptured diaphragm. The fuel should never be on that side of the diaphragm.

You've had a run of bad luck lately.

yep they go bad. no telling how long it has been on the shelf. it's a big reason I plan to put a late model fuel injection type pump in the tank of my car before i start driving it long distances. make sure you didn't add a bunch of gas to your crankcase after you change the pump

I just changed the oil due to it being dilluted with gasoline from a messed up carburetor and had only run it less than two minutes when I noticed the fuel gushing from the fuel pump. Dont know how long it was spitting fuel out but dont believe it just started. Maybe both the carburetor and the pump were putting gasoline in the crankcase?

If the leak is big enough, the fuel will rise into the crank case. The area above the diaphragm is open to the crankcase.

Were they all returned for the same issue?

Yes they all leak. Externally most of the time. Some internally. I had one guy put 3 on his street rod in the course of a month. We took one apart and the diaphragm was deformed and split. Put a Carter on and problem solved.

Based on your recommendation I have ordered a Carter M4889 which I should receive Monday. Will take my chances with returning the Holley pump to the engine builder. It has less than 3 hours on it and under 50 miles. What a shame that their products have deteriorated. Thing is the fuel pump is only about 3 inches from the header tube on the number 2 cylinder and when I noticed the fuel gushing it was soaking the header tube. Very strong chance for a fire.

I've replaced every one of them with a Carter. These are guys I see at the car shows every month. Zero problems with the Carter's. I don't know why Holley has not done anything about it. The first one I returned was over a year ago.

Re: Holley Fuel Pump Gushing Fuel

A few years ago coming home to Pittsburgh from the Chevelabration. Mark ( 65 Chevelle S.B. Mt. Pleasant,Pa) . Driving on the I-State his " Super Duper Chrome Plate High Dollar fuel pump ". Took a crap!
I stay with the cars, Mark and a friend get a STOCK CHEVY fuel pump from a local parts store. That was 6-8 years ago. That ugly, NON Chrome plated off the shelf fuel pump is still on the car.
Years ago, Remember the old saying, " If it dont go,,, Chrome it. " !

82c10step, are you a vendor or a shop?

Re: Holley Fuel Pump Gushing Fuel

I think this guy has or can make rebuild kits for any pump.
