Question 572 questions / Help

I am thinking about installing a GM 572 in my 71 convertible. It currently has a 496 installed and was looking for more power. I do want to keep it streetable and pump gas with the vacuum power brakes. I run across a 572 that has been rebuilt with some runs on it. It is mostly the stock build except the rings, springs and lifters which all were upgraded. It also comes with a set of lemon headers.
Will this 572 fit without modifications.
Will the valve covers clear the brake booster?
Will I be able to get the stock air cleaner to fit?
Will the stock AC, power steering and alt brackets fit?
Any help will be appreciated.

Nelson

Re: 572 questions / Help

its a tall deck block so it will agrivate aircleaner clearance as well as brake booster clearance. you do have headers so thats a plus.

Re: 572 questions / Help

The tall deck is about .400 taller so see what you now have as far as the brake booster goes. If you need to you can go to a dual 9 inch booster and pick up another inch. Air cleaner height go buy some silly puddy and put it in key areas. The tall deck will be about 1/2 or so higher in that regard. Somebody else may have a more precise answer also depends on manifold. You cowl induction hood will help. Maybe some other GM 572ers will chime in.

Re: 572 questions / Help

How much power does your 496 make now and how much more do you need?
One other thing to consider is a hydroboost setup that works off of power steering pump pressure. I've had several in 3/4 and 1-ton trucks and they'll make it stop RIGHT NOW!
Lemons headers...I'm jealous! What was the application? They're pretty specific, I hope they work out for you.

Oil pan will be important, and what is the problem with the 496?

Re: 572 questions / Help

I do not want to change the brake booster as it is original and I want to keep it somewhat original looking. Below is what I have now, I think the cam and compression are what is killing me. We were at back to the bricks and put it on the dyno and I remember not being happy. I would rather keep me Stainless works headers but I don't think they will work on a tall deck??? I want to keep a mechanical fuel pump.

How much are you looking to pay for that 572? With that money you could probably make similar power and have money left over

You could do, new pistons(10.1 compression), cam, and bigger exhaust and make 620hp

Re: 572 questions / Help

My personal feeling is to redo/freshen the 496. Tall deck, long stroke would be more hassle. Not sure where your from, but Mike, Mark, and others can update your combination. Depending on piston weight(for balance), it might be a good option for a compression upgrade, and/or skim the head, thinner head gasket. The 512 is a good block too, so work with it.

Re: 572 questions / Help

The problem with redoing this engine is downtime. I cannot pull until June than take it to a shop and wait for how long???

572 price?? He is looking for an offer. It made 660 with 950 quick fuel carb.

Re: 572 questions / Help

Get compression up almost 2 points and put a decent sized cam in it and it will wake it up. Whose idea was it to use flat top pistons? You have good heads and rotating assembly, don't throw out the baby with the bathwater. Next time use some performance pistons - every Keith Black I've held felt like a brick compared to more modern designs.
If you have to have current headers altered or customs built for the 572, down time could be even longer than a rebuild with new pistons and a cam.
Drive it this summer and pull it in the dead of winter when you might not be driving it anyway.
The hydraulic roller 572 is a candy ass in my opinion anyway. Any engine builder worth his salt can build a 700+hp hydraulic roller 565 without breaking a sweat. GM's heads are a big restriction. Your 496 could probably do 660...

Re: 572 questions / Help

Not sure where you're located but check out Mark's site. His 496's are driver friendly and probably a lot cheaper than the 572. Mike (Wolfplace) can also build a great engine affordably.

Re: 572 questions / Help

Blueprint engines is selling a standard-deck short block for $4200 !

https://www.speedwaymotors.com/BlueP...hoCTpsQAvD_BwE

You can get up to a 598" short block but then you have so much torque you're bound to break everything else LOL

Don't get me wrong that 572 will haul ass but you do have a lot to work with.
I wouldn't mind a 572...but for the money i am staying with my 489 because I know I can always upgrade it and make similar power for less cash.

I would stick with updating your 496 also.

You have a lot of good parts there.

Pistons with more compression
Port heads and update valve job
Cam
2.5" exhaust will hold it back

to reduce downtime:

AFR 265-300 oval port series heads are 112 CC chamber

Re: 572 questions / Help

Nelson, what area in Mi are you in?
I am near Frankenmuth. We were at the Bricks also.
VortecPro will be a great choice. I have one of his 467's. I almost started it today just to hear it run. But, l would not expect to get one from him for at least 6 months.
