Re: Taking it to the track

Thanks everyone.

The car is full of compromises to make it a better street car (heavy OD trans/converter, sound abatement, pump gas, sort of a full exhaust, full carpet, 20 gal cell, all steel except hood, etc...) so I'm super happy with the results. Without major changes to the combo and giving up street manors (like a trans swap) I think my areas for improvement are in the front suspension & ladder bar settings. Thinking about ditching the coilover springs (keeping the DA shock) and going with a full length spring that will store some energy and loosen up the front. After the front work, maybe experiment with front ladder bar positioning. Leaves pretty straight so for now the preload must be about right.

Thanks again

Yep, so far I'm very happy with the EFI. Odly it's has had significantly less issues than the Holley Terminator on the wife's 71 El Camino even though the cam is much smaller on the elco.

Car:
69 Firebird convertible

12 point cage (gets some odd looks with the cage when the top is down )

All steel (except hood)
Ladder bar rear (4.10:1 12 bolt w/spool)
31" tall tire (could use more gear for the strip but with a tall tire and OD it's good for the street/highway)

3600lbs (with me in it)

Engine:
540 (bow tie block)

AFR 315
10.4:1 (built for and uses pump 91)

Mahle pistons/rings
Callies dragonslayer crank

Isky Hy roller (248/258 @ 50 on 111)

Edelbrock Pro Flo 3 XT EFI
752 corrected @ 6200

Trans:
Fully built 4L80
Manual valve body
10" billet 3 disk converter (capable of lock up at WOT but it's very heavy)

Re: Taking it to the track

Allen, who's converter do ya have? I have a Circle D triple for my 80E also.
It is heavy, but hits exactly like the 8" treemaster (4500) in my th350.
Did you lock it in 3rd? If not you probably could have gotten another 1/1.5 mph out of it.

That's an awesome setup.

I have a 68 Camaro convertible with a roll bar too; I took out the bar crossing the front seats. I also have a 67 Chevelle.

I know a spool is great for the strip, but have you considered a true-trac ? That's what I plan on using in my 12 bolt.

I'm using a 6.0L LQ4 with a 4L80e. The converter is a stock Silverado truck with 2400 stall.

Needless to say, I'll be about 2-3 seconds behind you in a race. LOL

Don't know who made the converter it's from Animal Performance but I'm sure they don't make them.

Haven't tried the lock up yet but looking forward to it.

Nice stable!

I'm in the middle of a vintage air install on my daily driver project (64 El Camino). They call it a "Sure fit", well sort of..... but not bad so far.

I have true track in the 64 and have used them in the past, great differential. The Firebird had the spool when I got it, I've done a few cars & Jeeps with Detroit lockers and to be honest, the spool isen't that much harder to live with: absolutluy not for a daily driver but for a car like this it feels okay.

Re: Taking it to the track

750 man is a big block tempting.....can you get it to the ground on the street without constantly spinning?
Have a buddy offering me a free 454 block but not sure that would be enough, not even sure what the current sbc is capable of.

Nice ride, get some video!!
Know late model boosted stuff makes #s but have no interest. Love old school power!

Street tires (31/16/15 MT Sportsman SR) are a problem if I'm not easy on the throttle, but that's not such a bad problem to have

Re: Taking it to the track

Very nice congrats!! I may go with the 4L80E down the road. I do like my TH400/GV set up but would really like the full lock up on the freeway for super long trips.
