I agree. Find something else. Either you have buy after market caps and have them fitted to the block or let the machine shop see if they can find stock caps that fit the registers well and then have to align bore the block to reset the centerline. Changing main caps is a major undertaking.

The machinist ended up having a 454 4bolt main block laying around so I end up buying that one from him. I think I’ll be purchasing one of the rotating assemblies from Mike Lewis. I’m still undecided on heads and cam though. I have been looking at a set of the flotek heads that chad sells bcuz I think they’ll be able to get me to around the hp that I want and they’re within my price range

Re: 496 help

I think either the flotek or the 317 Promaxx from chris straub are good affordable choices. As long as they finished correctly they work fine. I have a set of the 317ís on a 496.

Finding out what "combination" works for one person may not be what will work for you. Your best bet will be to contact either Mike Lewis (aka wolfplace), Mark Jones (aka VortecPro) or Chris Straub. Tell them your intended use, vehicle info and budget are and let them propose options for you. If you ask twenty people what they're running you'll get twenty different answers and your head will be spinning. I have personal experience with both Mike Lewis and Mark Jones and I can tell you neither of them will lead you down the primrose path.

I have a 496 with AFR 265’s and a cam spec’d by Mike Lewis. I ditched Patriot Performance 325’s because the car was difficult to drive unless I floored it. It surged and loaded up and I would have to smack the throttle to clear it. It makes 620 hp and 620 tq with the 265’s. It made 620 hp and 585 tq with the 325’s. Car lopes along at 1800 RPM now like a dream... and screams to 6000 like a banshee. I’m very happy with the combo and would recommend it to anyone.

Re: 496 help

I feel the most important thing you need to decide is where you want to make peak power. And what is your peak rpm you are going to turn it. And then make a cam head choice from there.

Curious - did you also go with a much smaller cam with the 265's?

Re: 496 help

I built a 489, scat 9000 kit external balance, 12cc icon pistons, afr265 heads with cnc 112 cc chambers that made 583 hp @ 5900 RPM with team g intake and 1050 4150 cfm carb. the block wasn't decked at that time so under 10.1 compression and a .612" lift hyd roller cam 250s at .050.
I added 1 pt of compression, bored an other .030 to make a 496, ported afr265s and intake, added some lift to .650 still hyd roller in the mid 250s and made 680 hp at 6000 rpm.
I now have AFR315 with upper 250s @ .050 hyd roller, .660 lift on intake. never dynoed this combo. I lost .7 to 1 compression from 11.0 to 10.3 with the change. car has been 10.40s with the exhaust and 10.0s with open headers @ 3500 lbs and near sea level air density.
