498 Dyno, RR270 ovals and Straub cam

I've been S L O W L Y gathering parts for an engine for my 69. Got it on the dyno yesterday.

I already had the heads. The cam and balanced rotating assembly came from Chris Straub, I want to thank him for listening to what I wanted and delivering EXACTLY that. I told him I wanted 600 hp with a peak at 5700 to shift at 6000, and a bunch of mid range torque. He came up with a package that delivered that. Consider me a happy customer. BTW these numbers were with 2-1/2 dyno headers. The pyro was messed up on #4 confirmed with i/r.

I know we could have made a bunch more power if i wanted more rpm, but I am building this to drive. This is going in a 69 malibu, bench seat, column shift car with a th-400, and 3.42 gear.

Any how, engine did suffer from a minor self inflicted injury that stopped us at one recorded pull attached bellow. the pull after this the power was down and it coughed. had a rocker arm stud back half way out, the rocker, stud, helicoil and push rod were fine, but it broke the guide plate.. upon further inspection there were 3 loose. Goes to show why we should double check stuff as it comes in. I would have liked to tune on it a bit, but all in all i consider it a success.

That Straub youngster can mathematically figure out what you need for a camshaft to make power right where you tell him you want it. I hope you get the valvetrain issue straightened out quickly. Motor made just what one would expect for that combination or a bit more.

Why is it we never have time or money to do it the right way in the beginning but we always have time and money to do it over again?

I saw it on FB this morning. Looks like a nice combo that delivered! You should be able to get into the 10s and drive like stock...

I must have misread earlier, but I thought it was a 227/241* cam or therebouts of? Not that it matters, I'm just wondering if I'm going crazy...

I edited the cam specs on FB. My fault...lack of coffee.

Re: 498 Dyno, RR270 ovals and Straub cam

Thatís a stout motor to be under 10 to 1compression.

And it made itís max power at under 6000.

That is going to be one great street engine.

'67 Chevelle Malibu, Catalina Blue, 540 inch Rat, Air Flow Reasearch 290 CNC Heads heads, Custom Hyd Roller, .675 lift, 234, 244 at .050, Lemons Headers, Holley Multiport Fuel Injection, TCI 6X 6Speed Automatic, 12 bolt Posi Eaton TruTrac, 3:31 Richmond Gears, front and rear power disc brakes, Global West Suspension, etc.

Thanks Alan, been a big fan of your car for years! I really liked that it worked so well with 3:31s, and have to say a big influence in the direction this took. I'm hoping this will be a fun combination to drive with a tight 10" tree master.

I was confused about the fb thing until seeing Chris' response. Not the Clay Smith cam, but I have bought one of them from Chris as well so I could be confusing ... lol This one has a bit more rowdy idle to it, when it first fired my engine builder looked at me and said "well so much for your sleeper idea".

242/254 on 107 LSA has to be lumpy as heck. You already had the heads? My guess is those are a choke point. 500" stroker could've used at least a 300cc intake runner and a smaller cam with wider LSA. I'm going to guess this motor only pulls about 7-8" vacuum at idle?

I have DUI's small body version of a HEI. I had to go to it because the regular HEI would not fit between the injector rails on the Holly Multiport Fuel Injection. Works Great.

The DUI coil mounts right on the firewall.
