Re: 5 speed trans for bbc car.

I was told it is about the same length as a tko 3550 or with in an inch. I have not been able to confirm that but you will have to shorten the drive shaft 1-3" depending on application.
I have not checked on cryo yet the place I linked to has one or two short 26 spline shafts in stock at the 400 price but the reason they are limited is cause of no cores to build new one's. So if you want to upgrade you can send in your 10 spline so they can reuse the gear and make you the length you need it is the same price either way just the wait time is different.

Mine is not hooked up so it did not matter to me but the 3650 uses a digital one so you could use a digital speedometer.

Re: 5 speed trans for bbc car.

Back about 10 years ago, I got a hell of a deal on a richmond 5 spd.... paid $500 for it, bought it from my wifes Boss, who had it in a rarely driven '62 Vette with a very mellow LS1 in it, more of a show car. He replaced it with a new one because it was jumping out of gear.... when his new one kept also jumping out of gear he then had someone adjust the shifter linkage correctly and then had a spare trans he didn't need.

I paid more for the shifter than the Trans... I know... I should be in jail.

I am pushing the torgue limits on the trans but so far so good.

Did you have to do any mods to the trans tunnel to get the trans to fit? What about the shifter location? I have a '67 4 speed car and I'd like to convert to a5 speed, but I don't want to cut it up to make that happen.

Thanks,
Mike

Re: 5 speed trans for bbc car.

If your go to Silver Sports Transmission website they talk about a mod they do to the trans (think it's about $600.00) that may or may not keep one from having to cut their trans tunnel. I spoke with them once and they would give no guarantees that one would not have to mod their tunnel even with the trans mod. But I believe some have not had to cut tunnel.
One creative idea I read about in a thread here was someone that did have to mod their tunnel but just used a piece of donor tunnel from another car to add to their tunnel to give the needed clearance. That would at least make fab bing the tunnel mod easy.

Re: 5 speed trans for bbc car.

Transmission choice depends on how the vehicle will be used. Overdrive transmission is best choice for a street-driven vehicle, but not beneficial for a drag race-only application. I have had excellent results with Jerico 5-speed, which has a broad range of ratios available for first through fourth gear (fifth gear is 1.00). Remember, when choosing gear rations for this type of transmission to specify the largest ratio spread between first and second gear, with smaller and smaller ratio spreads between second/third; third/fourth; fourth/fifth. This way, you utilize engine torque at lower speeds to accelerate the vehicle.
