Re: 565 REDO five years later

We seem to have almost gotten through the T and D rocker setup. Pattern was nice. Had to grind the mounting bar for the stands a little to have pushrod clearance. I think we have been very thorough fitting/assembling this one.

Re: 565 REDO five years later

Took Orange Monster for a ride around town today, then shuffled cars so she is at the back of the building again. Time to go racing and she isn't going. Weather didn't cooperate when I wanted to run her two weeks ago.

Re: 565 REDO five years later

Bad news and good news. The 582 in the chassis car was hurt last weekend racing. Not real bad from what I've looked at so far.

The 2013 565 is being bolted on the dyno right now. Should have results this time tomorrow. Gotta go to work or we would run it later today.

I bet you're gonna be happy. Sucks about the 582 though. I guess it helps if you have a spare 565 though.

I agree you never want to have to pull an engine between freshen ups but it’s part of racing. You figure we built these things to intentionally try to break them. Otherwise we’d be running then easy.

I put plugs in those nitrous bungs. I think it will make significantly more torque than last time down low and a tad bit more horsepower at 7200 rpm. This was my back half burner motor.

Will play with nitrous down the road when the 582 is close to ready again as a replacement motor.

If it survives the dyno beatdown and makes as much power as last time I will be happy.

Throttle stop racing part of the time is easy on them. I just gotta run her all out out too often.

Re: 565 REDO five years later

Dart 4.6 bore block
Callies Magnum crankshaft 4.25 stroke
Callies Ultra I beam rods
JE custom FSR pistons 13.5 to 1 compression, maybe a little more.
5 year old AFR 357 magnums Tony Mamo worked over
Merlin X intake ported by Tony Mamo
Comp Cams 281/294 at .050 camshaft .823/.787 lift
.903 Morel Ultra Pro solid lifters
T and D 1.75 shaft rockers
Old Pro systems 1200 cfm carb

Peak torque 803.3 lb./ft at 5500 rpm
HP repeating several times 988.6 hp at 7200 rpm (990 once)

Same combination as 5 years ago but tried to get more compression and the cam was put in at 108icl instead of 109.5

It actually did what I expected with 16 more torque and 9-10 more horsepower then in 2013. (compression and cam ICL I believe)

Should push the firebird 8.40's in good air.

HP still 966 at 7700 rpm, still carries power like a mofo.

Should be a solid motor for the racing I do .

Another baddass BBC to your collection Jon!!
BTW...did you just use that one carb at dyno and what did you end up for a spacer?

I used my oldest Pro-System's carb, probably 7 years old now? I had an out of the box 1" super sucker spacer I had bought when I thought my throttle stop was hurting performance three years ago. My experience is a spacer has helped in every application I have used them when running a Merlin X. 2" may have been even better...did not try.

Carb came in jetted 98 square from other motor, 100 jets in front 101 in back made more torque in the TQ curve but not as much hp. Played with timing, proved to the retired guys those heads like 37 degrees advance. They moved it around but ended the day back with 98 jets and the 37 timing like I know has worked in other combinations.

Set lash hot after about 10 pulls, just set .018 and .020 like the card said. I liked the power curves so did not deviate from what the card said.

Fun day on the dyno for all involved, that doesn't always go that way.
