Which new mufflers?

I had 30 series Flowmasters with full tail pipes on my 70 Chevelle 496. They had the famous drone at steady speed on the highway so I took them off and had Dynomax Super Turbo mufflers installed. I just don't like the sound of these so I am going to change them. What do you guys recommend? I didn't have the drone when I had the 4 speed but with the 700r4 it drove me crazy. I don't want it extremely loud and I will be using the full tailpipes that are on the car now. I don't want the drone either, I drive on the highway a lot.

Re: Which new mufflers?

I happen to like Magna Flow because they have a reasonable amount of quiet and no drone at cruise and bark nicely when you get on the loud pedal. That's my .02 anyway.

Re: Which new mufflers?

I have the 2 Chamber Summit mufflers on my car, very happy with the sound-but they are not quiet.
They flow well too as I used to have Race Pros on my car and the MPH did not change at the track.
This is a 2.5" system with stock exhaust manifolds.

Re: Which new mufflers?

They are pretty quiet until you get on it. 3"x pipe full 3 inch exhaust. Hooker Super Comp. 100% stainless steel 3"mufflers straight through no baffles. Will probably out live me.

Dynomax ...Sunday driving. Too many cops out here to crack it open. OHHH but I wanted to so badly. CHP passes in opposite direction at 9:30. Flips it and follows me for 10 minutes. Finally passes and throws a thumbs up in another video.

flowmaster 40's ...Dronies. Full 3 inch exhaust no cross pipes.

I had to quiet it down. I was having too many red and blue lights behind me when running the Flowmaster 40's. Flow master didn't seem to lasr long on this set up. Once a year I was replacing one because the baffles inside were coming loose.???

The flowmaster 44's sound pretty cool. Not sure about drone on those though.

Re: Which new mufflers?

I've got a built 454 in my 70. Headers and 3" full length pipes with Flowmaster Delta Flow 50's & I love the sound. Just loud enough and NO drone!

Re: Which new mufflers?

I have a set of twin Flowmaster 50's behind my 383 and the drone is bad. They sound decent at Idle but are loud as my wife says she can hear me coming up the road from several blocks away. I had Borla's on a previous car and they were nice sounding and well made. I hear Magnaflows are good sounding as well.

Magnaflow, Borla and Dynomax Ultras are all a form of glasspacks. They are a straight through design with some form, of matting to deaden the sound. I cringe at that statement, but they do sound good and are built well.

Flowmasters and most others are a chamber design that rely on baffles to deaden sound so they have more of a chamber exhaust tone. The chamber tone is more of what I expect from a muscle car. Usually the quieter they are the more they restrict the flow.

Re: Which new mufflers?

DMH that clip prompted me to put the same on mine, long case. Love em but they can drone fairly good at 2500 the WOT sound is worth it

OP the quietest ones I know of are dynomax super turbos 22 in case but if you didnt like the others then

Whatever it is get the biggest case you possible can. Have seen guys stuff suitcase types behind the rearend, secondarys up behind the rear tires etc

Bet a termination box would really help, makes sense...lots of topics on it @ speedtalk

Re: Which new mufflers?

I run Jones Full Boar exhausts long case on my 66 with x-pipe and 2.5 inlet and outlets. Long cases keep drone to a minimum.

Re: Which new mufflers?

I've been using Welded ultraflo's on my Nova.
My son has them also.
We run X pipes tho.
I don't like them without one but for max effort we wanted straight though.
Click on my youtube vid to hear the old exhaust.
It was a 3" from the hedders 1/2 way through the X where it reduced to 2.5" to the ultraflows and tailpipes.
I'm currently running a full 3" X mujfflers and tailpipes.
With 80E converter locked I don't "hear" a drone.
I am running 4.30''s so that helps.
Running lower numerically gears will compound the drone especially with the converter locked.
