You don't hear/see much about them.
Don't know why but I'm sure we'll find out!

Cheaper than machining a seasoned block, by my math...

Tall deck does not use a standard intake or distributor. May also have header fitment problems due to the added height.

There's a guy around here or on the Corvette site that's done a ton of custom work on intake, bracketry, the works getting one into his ride. Great fab skills and an impressive job, haven't seen an update in awhile...

I agree with others. That is the O.E.M. engine in the 02--03 ( ??? ) Chevy Suburban. A buddy of mine has one. I would guess is like the old 427 TRUCK ( Tall Deck)engine.
A lot of the standard B. Block items, Do not work on this block.

Re: Any experience with gen viii/Vortec 8.0 blocks?

No. The Gen 7 came in early 2000s Suburbans/Avalanch 2500s. Thats the 8.1l oddball.

The Gen 8 is a modern design that uses LS style coil near plug, with modern BBC architecture, mark iv-mark vi heads, as well as a distributor hole and a fuel pump provision.

4.270"x4.250" (opposed to the 8.1L's 28x4.375)

Re: Any experience with gen viii/Vortec 8.0 blocks?

Looks like a tall deck Gen 6 to me, conventional type heads, non-siamesed cylinders, etc. It gets cubes from 4.270" bore and a stroker (4.25") crank. Built as a crate engine for LP/CNG. I can't see the advantage over a tall deck Gen 6 with a stroker crank. With the right fab work, ANY engine can run cam and crank sensors and coil near plug, I've seen more than one Gen 6 with that setup.

Why not use an L21 if you want the CNP set up?

The marine guys seem to have a handle on their use of the 8.0's - and have high performance parts in use - FWIW.
