1967 Chevelle Vinyl top HELP

I have a 1967 Chevelle I'm in the middle of restoring and want to add a vinyl top. Do I need to have the little studs welded on for the rear trim or can I drill holes and use clips any pros and cons for either? Also do I need to get new drip rail trim? If so any where to get decent repops? Also should I have the top installed before the glass in reinstalled? Any other suggestions are appreciated.

They make screw in studs so that you can use the standard clips - no need to weld studs. OPGI, SS396, NPD all carry the studs. Vinyl top drip rail molding is different than non-vinyl - get the correct ones! It will be easier for the shop installing the vinyl top is the glass isn't in, so if you can wait it's generally considered better. I just had a new top done on the Chevelle I'm restoring and the rear window was out, the windshield was in. Came out great.

Good luck with yours!

Drip rail moldings are the same for non vinyl & vinyl roof cars & do not affect the vinyl roof install. The vinyl was trimmed & glued down in the channel & held in by thin plastic strips, not the moldings.

I was young & dumb when I began restoring my 1st '67. I didn't realize those strips were installed by the factory & I tossed them. Now they're as rare as hen's teeth.

So what would I use if I can't find any of those strips?
Thanks for the information.

Re: 1967 Chevelle Vinyl top HELP

Good question. I was never interested in reinstalling the vinyl roof on my '67 so I never really investigated the proper way to put it together. I sold the aluminum moldings & never gave it a second thought.

It was only years later when I read a post here on TC that I realized those strips were original & that I was a 19 year old idiot. So honestly this is a question best answered by someone who actually has one installed on their car. Sorry I'm no help.
