Rear Bumper Issues (66 Chevelle)

Alright TC, looking for a lil help on this one. The rear bumper is shifted to the passenger side and I'm having trouble figuring out why. The driver side is touching the rearmost portion of the quarter and the passenger side is sitting off the quarter ~1". I'll give as much detail as possible, nothing is welded in place yet...all secured with vice grips or self-tapping screws

1.New frame
2.New trunk pan is sitting properly on brand new bushings and both sides are snugged tight, correct bushings (top & bottom) have been double checked
3.New rear tail panel is placed properly (I believe) and shows equal hang over on the trunk pan flange
4.New quarters are secured flush against rocker panel and each side snug to tail panel and secured with ST screws
5.New package tray and deck filler panel are secured place and well within fitment spec and deck filler is secured to quarters with ST screws
6.New bumper, new bumper brackets and new hardware
7.Bumper & brackets are hand tight to each other and to the frame
8."Peak" of the bumper is centered on the fuel neck notch in the frame

Happy to take any other pics/provide any other info that may help kick me in the right direction. TIA

Re: Rear Bumper Issues (66 Chevelle)

New Bumpper out of whack !?

Find Reference places and Measure the Ends Gap for each side of the Bumper and compare

Measure from the Center/Peak Line of Bumper to Each End of the Bumper and compare

How's the body in relation to the frame? Has it been lined up using the holes in the frame and braces?

Re: Rear Bumper Issues (66 Chevelle)

I can't tell in that one shot, but do you have the center bracket installed & bolted to the frame? The center bracket pulls the bumper in & up & the sides move accordingly.

Loosely bolting it up won't really show you where you're at. The holes in the brackets are over sized to allow for adjustment. You should be able to get some side to side movement just by sliding the bolts around.

Also, you really should install the quarter panel extensions in order to line it all up correctly.

Re: Rear Bumper Issues (66 Chevelle)

with all the parts you have replaced i also would say the body is not sitting on the frame square.as mentioned, put the tail light housings on it will make it easier, then adjust accordingly, and by the looks of it the trunk lock hole looks like it is to the left of center of the bumper

Re: Rear Bumper Issues (66 Chevelle)

Measure from the frame to a reference point on each 1/4. I'm guessing you need to shift the body over on the frame.

Tighten it till it strips and back it off a quarter turn.

Re: Rear Bumper Issues (66 Chevelle)

Look at your bumper pictures from above. There is a big difference from one side to the other in the distance of the v shape of the bumper and its the way it's showing off.

Gotta Gotta Gotta do this first! What with all the work that has been done on the car - the body has to be centered on the frame or you'll be chasing more issues down the road than just a bumper!
Take several left / right measurements starting from the front of the car & work your way back to the rear of the car.

And I agree with Hanks observation as well!

Re: Rear Bumper Issues (66 Chevelle)

Progress!, I think I got her figured out. I added the drop-offs/extensions and that seemed to do it....nothing needed to be jammed in, everything went into place as expected. I'll work on the driver side tomorrow before declaring victory on this item. Thanks for the help TC, you all are the best!
