What do you call it?

I'm totally green to all this stuff but I'm retiring and have always wanted to restore a Chevelle.

So I saw that Auto Metal Direct sells all kinds of sheet metal parts for Chevelles: quarter panels, roof, tail gate, etc.

But what do you call the part of the car that all of these pieces of sheet metal are welded to? I want to call it the frame but a Chevelle is not unibody people call the chassis the frame.

Is this the only part of the car that cannot be purchased as new from some aftermarket company?

Most call it the shell. A 70 shell can be bought new from Dynacorn.

Amazing what they are coming out with for these cars today. The Chevelle parts book keeps getting thicker each year.

Dynacorn Chevelle Body Shell

Tighten it till it strips and back it off a quarter turn.

Re: What do you call it?

The OP asked what the some sheetmetal parts are welded to. Which in part begins with a pre assembled door frame. He did not inquire about a Dynacorn body. Same as modern cars, get it used or buy new. https://www.ebay.com/i/391951867193?...xoCzTMQAvD_BwE
Here's another one: Quarter/Door Frame Assembly : Champion Chevelle, Online shopping for body, molding & interior components for Chevelle & Monte Carlo Plenty of suppliers out there.

The OP is green and there is a lot to learn if one has not been in this business for decades.

If one is in the business and works on these cars every day, it will soon be discovered that parts are not plug and play.

This is so obvious and maybe understated fact. Repop parts, for the most part, are crap. A person doesn't have to do many restoration or repair projects on an older vehicle to learn this.

Re: What do you call it?

you could call it a inner structure as that was "shared" with other "A" bodies

If the op is asking where to get a inner structure to weld all the replacement panels to I assume he could use the complete body, just trying to save the op some work.

Tighten it till it strips and back it off a quarter turn.

Amazing,to me anyway. I always thought that you would need a donor car for those type of parts.
Thanks,Raven

Re: What do you call it?

You may well need a good donor A-body for the" little" parts that are not available and to see how the factory assembled the originals
