Drilling For Mirror

In near future am going to add mirror to passenger door. What is the purpose of the larger hole (approx 5/8) that is in the driver's door. As far as I can see only holes needed are two small holes for mounting bracket.

Optional remote control, The had a large muti strand cable to control movement.

I would also consider using a NUTSERT instead of just screws.

Re: Drilling For Mirror

Got it. My plan was to drill the two holes in the door larger than needed but add a plate underneath that I would tap the holes in the plate for the screws. Just prior to first installation put some JB Weld (or similar ) to top of plate that will contact underside of door, then screw mounting plate, through door, to threaded backer plate. Sound good?

It will work and is far better than sheet metal screws.
