Best bumpers ??

I need bumpers for my 66. The existing front is just slightly tweaked but in multiple directions. The existing rear has a couple of dents.
I remember when I bought bumpers for my 67 years ago, the shape was not even close. Where the front wrapped around the fender, the bumper faded away from the fender resulting in a widening gap. It bugged me the whole time I owned the car.
Who makes the best replacement bumpers? Correct shape AND quality chrome?

Re: Best bumpers ??

Call Tri City plating. They may have some original bumpers that they have re-chromed. They are going to be your best fit and finish and the prices aren't too bad.

Itís $375/bumper from Tri City to have yours redone. The repro bumpers are ok at best.

Re: Best bumpers ??

Does that include straightening, dent removal? My front is ďtweakedĒ slightly in multiple directions and the rear has two small dents.
Plus freight both ways from California to Illinois.
I would be looking at approx $1k with two way freight if they donít charge extra to straighten.
And then some POS will back into it at Safeway.
I can buy front and rear Dynacorn, delivered, for about $400. And sell my cores for ??
So.....Dynacorn, Goodmark, AMD, ???

Re: Best bumpers ??

If you do go aftermarket, the Goodmark brand sells two different qualities. You want the one with an "A" at the end. It stands for "American made" and I think that applies to the plating process. Other than that, they are the same part number for the offshore. The offshore one is cheaper priced but I have the american made and they are really nice. I cannot tell that they aren't originals. Re: Best bumpers ??

Recently paid $1550 for 3 bumpers done from TriCities. That included shipping both ways, straightening and rechrome.

Re: Best bumpers ??

When I had Tricity plating do my bumpers I saved the shipping because they attended the show in Carlisle and I picked them up with no shipping costs. It might be worth a phone call to see if they are going to any shows near you.

Re: Best bumpers ??

The a Goodmark premium quality for the front of the 66 is obsolete. They only offer the standard quality now.
The premium quality rear is still available. Iím going to order the rear now just in case they discontinue that one too.

Some leftovers still available if you look around. Try ebay.

Re: Best bumpers ??

Just put new AMD bumpers on my 64. They had a 40% off all in stock bumpers sale a couple of months ago so I took a shot (sign up at the web site, they run varied specials from time to time). Pretty good for a driver and a huge improvement over the dented and scratched originals. Rear fit really well but the front is a bit wider or maybe the end bends are not as sharp as the original, okay but not outstanding. Haven't cleaned them up yet to see how good the chrome is as the car is still coming together.

Re: Best bumpers ??

I've got a set of AMD bumbers for my 65 Chevelle and the look great. Can't say for sure where or who made them but they look and weigh the same as the originals. If your going to buy repros then I would buy from the source that has the best available and I'm thinking it's AMD.

I've never been quoted a price to do a bumper by calling. Except this local guy who wanted a thousand per bumper. They always want to see them before providing a quote. You need to be thinking $500 or $600 a bumper with no ding or bend repair. Have you seen what the cost is to ship a bumper 100 miles. To be honest I don't know how AMD can sell Bumpers for so cheap. These are really very nice. With some polish you can make them really shine. Once the chromer's have your bumper cha ching... your wallet will be slapping leather.

As far as how they remove chrome. I've had more answer's than you can list. Big trade secret as far as I can tell. Your told it's three layers. Okay, how many mils ? Proove it's three layer's.

So how come it costs so much. Dip it in the chemical that supposedly removes chrome like magic, Then re-dip it three times and your done. Chroming is going the way of the Dinosaur. The backyard restorer doesn't want to pay that kind of money on an item that has no serial number on it anyway. I sometimes think the people that claim these repro bumpers are no good are chromers. HA ! Rumors are hard to shake loose.

Re: Best bumpers ??

Chroming or rechroming bumpers is a much more involved process. I found this link on the Goodmark site where you can send your bumpers in and get your bumpers back.

Re Chrome Bumper Process | Re Chrome Bumper Chrome Plating

Follow the link at the bottom and it walks you through the process.
So now Iím torn. Two new premium quality bumpers from Goodmark/eBay for approx $650 or send mine in and get mine back for about $1000.

If you buy 2 new one, and IF you like them, you could sell your originals and make it even less overall.
