How many hours to replace door skin?

Hypothetically speaking, you take a door to a shop to have them cut off the old door skin and weld in a reproduction skin... how many hours would you expect to be billed?

I have someone who wants me replace the door skins on his 83 buick regal, his are rusting out at the bottom. Im trying to figure out how much I would charge him. I fully understand I would probably spend more hours doing the replacement than "book time", im certainly not a pro body guy. Just need some idea what a reasonable amount of money to charge him would be.

Thanks!

Time and materials.

A modern day car say a honda, is around 6 hrs.

You gonna clean up the shells and fix any rust and R&R a skin for 6 hrs, more power to you.

If he could have done that when he is going to pay you that same amount or more then he should rethink getting his repaired. Of course depending on the quality of the replacement.

Re: How many hours to replace door skin?

If he brings you a stripped(windows, runners, door handles)door,I would say 2 hours.
An hour(its not going to take an hour)to get the old one off.
An hour(its mostly clamped right? No continuous welds right, just a few tacks, mostly folded over).
So,200.00 a door,if parts are supplied and doors are stripped I would say is fair to all involved.

2 Hrs/ 200 bucks??

Talk about cheap labor.

There is not a chance in hell I would skin a door without the car. Door shells once the skin is removed can twist out of shape, now you install a skin on a twisted shell.

This is how a Professional installs a door skin.

I can have a skin laying on the ground within minutes, a full sized skin from a chevy truck installed without an once of filler in 20 mins, and I still wouldn't do that job for 200 bucks.

He said he wasnt a pro.Sounded like a side job.Im also assuming the new skin is checked, and the old body lines are at least marked first.

Re: How many hours to replace door skin?

What is the going hourly rate for body work? I was thinking of charging $50 per hour. Also i would have him supply the skins and charge him some for welding wire, grinding discs and such.

Re: How many hours to replace door skin?

I changed both of the skins on my Chevelle when I rebuilt the car doesn't seem to me that it took that long, I talked to my friend who owns a body shop and he told me the process.

I did mine on saw horses and the thought of it lining up never crossed my mind, they lined up perfectly.

You use a side grinder to grind off the edge and put a few spot welds in place then you use a backup dolly and body hammer to crimp the panel, you will need seam sealer, that's not free.
