Best plastic inner fenders?

My OEM inner fenders are shot, so I need new ones. Who makes the best plastic inner fenders for 71 Chevelles? I have an SS454 if that matters at all.

Thanks

Re: Best plastic inner fenders?

On my one owner 70 LS-5/ M-22 (Tlr. Queen) I had plastic inner fenders that were stamped " MADE IN CANADA ". I tried other plastic inners. Replacements from the dealership, The ones with a million numbers near the front of the inner fender. They should have a green " Mr. YUCK " sticker on them.
I bought some Reproduction inners,,,, METAL. The reproduction CHEVELLE inner fenders also fit, ALL G.M. products from 1928 to the 2019 Silverados. They also fit a 1949 Hudson.
YES, They will fit and look very nice. " WITH SOME WORK ".
If possible???????? Find a set of Org. 1970 metal inners and go in that direction.
When I built my 1971 Driver Nomad Sta. Wgn. I was going to remove the front inners and re/drill (for lights) and install them in my trailer Queen.
WHY?...... They fit and look just wonderful in my wagon. Its the same old story " Original Parts Fit ".............

Re: Best plastic inner fenders?

I definitely have no desire to go with metal fenders.

So basically no reproduction fenders fit worth a damn?

I installed steel fender skirts on my Monte. I didn't have to modify a single hole. It was a bear of a job though, I did it alone.

Same here. I believe plastic fender skirts on these cars will crack if the car is driven. Plastic does flex and if you're in a cold area, temperature swing cycles makes it brittle. My car had plastic GM skirts purchased in the 1980's. Both sides were cracked pretty good.

Although I have no proof, I feel steel fender skirts make the nose of the car a little more solid.

Re: Best plastic inner fenders?

I believe the fenders could make the front end more solid.

Another option is carbon fiber... only $1800+

Re: Best plastic inner fenders?

Correction: I couldn't find a battery tray that had holes that matched the holes in the right skirt. I don't know if the problem was the skirt or the tray. And the holes for the parking light harness pass-through isn't there, but I think only Montys need them.

Re: Best plastic inner fenders?

I agree with Paul.

My plastics cracked.

You can paint the metal much easier than the plastics also.

Re: Best plastic inner fenders?

Honest question. What would be the advantage of using plastic inner fenders? I'd imagine there is a small amount of weight you could shave off the car, but I'd also imagine this would only matter if you race competitively.

Also, I know this doesn't answer your original question, but I installed AMD inner fenders on my 66, with zero modifications needed to get them to fit.

It's all about weight. While not competitive racing at this point, I do track the car and the weight is a bad location. Frontward and outward. Plastic fenders are 5.5 lbs each.

Re: Best plastic inner fenders?

The shipping weight of a metal inner is 22lbs. The shipping weight of a plastic is 20 lbs.

With that said, I dont remember much of a difference in weight when I changed mine.

The metal is thin, the plastic is much thicker.

AMD shows plastic fender at 16 pounds, metal at 22. I do not know if that is shipping weight.
