65 trunk lid on 64 Chevelle, molding question

I purchased my 64 with a 65 trunk lid on it. At least that is my assumption because the molding holes match a 65, As does the molding on the lid. The car didn't come with any of the c molding that goes around the tail lights. My question is- will the 65 C molding fit the 64 (around the lights as well as match hole pattern)? I would like the C molding to match the lid molding (64 and 65 are slightly different-smooth vs ribbed), but want to make sure the 65 C molding will fit.

Re: 65 trunk lid on 64 Chevelle, molding question

Looked at pictures of 65s and compared with my 64 and from them I think its possible the c moldings will fit. If they are like 64 you can adjust the clips to sit where you want so quite possible the holes will match.

Re: 65 trunk lid on 64 Chevelle, molding question

I was just at a salvage yard saturday, they have a couple 65s that I've been getting random stuff from. I too need the trunk surround for my 64.

There was a "C" molding in the rear seat of one 65, I held it up to my 64, it seemed taller and wider than the 64 holes, fasteners didn't line up, don't think it would work.

The 65 has CHEVROLET across the center section of the trunk lid. 64 has a diecast trim piece with CHEVROLET across the top of the trunk surround trim. That hopefully will help you w/ the 65 lid question.

Re: 65 trunk lid on 64 Chevelle, molding question

Yes, Chevrolet lettering is across the center, like the 65.

It seems like the 64 C trim will line up, but will be smooth.

Thanks for the response.

Re: 65 trunk lid on 64 Chevelle, molding question

The countour of how the joint where quarter panel is welded to the taillight panel is different between a 64 and a 65. Lots of folks don't realize that even the quarter panel itself is stamped out differently at the back edge. The 65 C-molding lays down in a sort of "ditch" where the two panels are welded together, while the 64 C-molding lays on top of the smooth back edge of the quarter panel.

So you may be able to get the 65 trim to fit and line up but it will probably take some work. Good luck!

If you were closer I'd say we make a trade as I have a 65 with a 64 lid..
