The reason for the notch was some of the ancient rods had a groove in the parting line that allowed some oil to shoot out to the camshaft. They have not been that way for many decades as far as I know. If your rods have the groove and you are running a flat tappet cam it would not hurt to put a small notch on the bearings. If your rods do not have the groove or you are running a roller cam just don't worry about it. To be honest with you if I was doing it I would not notch the bearings either way.
