Creeping taxes

Our city sales tax is 8.1% and in the mail I get a ballot for a special election to raise it .5% for 5 years. 60% goes to police and fire dept for new equipment 40% for road repairs. Sure sounds good because our roads suck.
What gets me is it's the only prop on the mail in ballot. Curious how much it costs for printing and mailing. Wondering why they didn't put it on the November ballot a few months ago and save the expense?
Wish these clowns would stop spending our money. Rant over. Jim

Re: Creeping taxes

Be glad it's only 8.1% and they are asking for another .5%. The city I live in is 10% and it's not even the highest in the area.

Re: Creeping taxes

The city I live in has been at 9.75% sales tax rate for 10 years and just extended the 0.75% for another 10 years via Nov ballot vote. The 0.75% goes towards fire/police exclusively. But we also get hit with $540/yr assessment for police and $116/yr lighting and maintenance on property taxes. Walmart got a tax break for setting up shop here about 10 years ago. I don't mind paying extra for police and fire, but where is the point where city needs to bring in tax paying businesses to relieve some of the burden? The fees and taxes in CA in general are staggering.

FWIW: I'm a CPA and have been in practice for 20+ years.

Tax wise, CALI is the worst....by a considerable margin.

Beautiful coastline, beautiful people, beautiful scenery and mountains, beautiful blue sky days.....ugly, ugly taxes.

Much of California isn't so beautiful when the property values drop below seven figures.

Yeah - you'll never get that .5% back.

Anyone that believes THAT BS is delusional and/or naive.

That may be true, Tony but believe me, good old NY is trying their best to not only keep up but maybe even go into the lead!

Re: Creeping taxes

Youse guys on the coasts don't know how good you have it.
Try living in C(r)ook County IL.
10% sales tax in Chicago is standard and God only knows where the money goes. They are about to shut down the schools 3 weeks early for lack of funding. The state has not had a budget for 2 years due to political infighting in Springfield, the bond rating for IL and C(r)ook county are at junk levels. They tax everything they can think of. Soda is about to get $0.01 per OUNCE tax. Your favorite 2 liter is going to have $0.68 tax stuck on it, then they will charge you 10% tax on top of that tax!

And there is not much "beautiful" around here outside a few beaches and parks that are so overused it's almost impossible to get into them.

Re: Creeping taxes

Palm Beach County just raised state sales tax to 7%, and is typical government. when I pay my sales tax every month, I have to do the state 6% and then add a discretionary tax of 1% and the online work page won't accept it unless it is separate. Cali should invest in tourism like Flariduh! to keep it low.

Couple of junkers and a few clunkers.

TimP, I feel ya. I live down state in Mcdonough Co. We have nothing here and we're 3-4 highest in the state. We've lost 10 businesses in the last few years. Only solution for these people is to raise taxes. Re-elected our state rep that voted present 70% of the time! Several years back we got a grant to hire 3 police officers, when the grant ran out guess what?

Re: Creeping taxes

How come we can't get more money if we overspend. There has to come a time when the Federal and State governments get their act together. Our job is to make, make, make, and theirs is to take, take, take.

Re: Creeping taxes

Moon Beam Brown wants to add another 0.12 a gallon to our gas which is already taxed beyond belief and on average another $50.00 dollars a car to the registration fees.
Most of the voters in this state are brain dead.

Re: Creeping taxes

Our wonderful Gov Christie raised our gas taxes 23 cent / gallon, but offset that by reducing the sales tax from 7% to 6.875% !! It's hard enough for cashiers to count out change let alone figure out what 6.875% works out to. Gas tax is to address road repairs, but I've yet to see any of that happen. Don't get me started on property tax which is typically more per month than your mortgage. I have to start planning where I'm going to retire because one can't do it in New Jersey...

What are our wonderful elected officials going to do when there is nothing left to take, take, take?
